University of Ibadan First-Class Maths Graduate Reveals How She Secured 5 Scholarships Despite 50 Rejections
Fathia Raji, a recent first-class Mathematics graduate from the University of Ibadan, has shared her inspiring story of securing five undergraduate scholarships while navigating over 50 rejections. Her journey offers valuable insights for students seeking financial aid and academic excellence.
From Bicycle Commutes to Academic Excellence
Fathia's path to success began in secondary school, where she made a pivotal decision to change schools for better education. "In SS2, I changed schools. My former school was short of teachers and I knew I wasn't getting what I needed, so I moved to Ridwanullah Model College. One of the best decisions I ever made," she recalled.
To manage transportation costs, she used her brother's old bicycle, leaving home by 5:30 AM daily to avoid crowds and stares. "People called me 'bicycle girl' but I wasn't bothered. I knew I couldn't afford to put that burden on my parents when there was another way," Fathia explained.
Her determination led her to study Mathematics at the University of Ibadan, where she faced an 8-month strike shortly after admission. She used this time productively to research scholarships, building a comprehensive list of opportunities to pursue when classes resumed.
Navigating Scholarship Applications and Early Mistakes
Fathia admitted making numerous mistakes during her initial scholarship applications. "I made every mistake possible in that process, but I made them fast. Fake websites, wrong links, all of it. Within about 5 months I had gone through all of that and came out knowing what was genuine," she said.
Despite facing rejections in her 100-level year, she persisted. By 200-level, she became well-known in the Head of Department's office for frequently requesting recommendation letters. Her breakthrough came with the Afrotech Girls scholarship, where authenticity made the difference. "What made the difference in my interview was simply being real. I told them my actual story, and made them understand exactly why I needed it," Fathia shared.
This success opened doors to four more prestigious scholarships:
- MTN Scholarship
- Opekete Foundation Scholarship
- Egbe Omo Yoruba of Greater Miami Valley Scholarship
- Jim Ovia Scholarship
Overcoming Rejections and Maintaining Persistence
The journey wasn't without challenges. Fathia faced over 50 scholarship rejections, losing count after a certain point. "I crossed over 50 rejections and honestly lost count somewhere after that. I even carried some of my coursemates along the way, and a number of them got shortlisted for tests before I ever did," she revealed.
While many of her peers gave up, Fathia's financial need drove her persistence. "I knew I couldn't afford to, not because I was stronger but because I genuinely needed the money so I could quit my part-time jobs and focus on my academics," she explained.
Practical Scholarship Application Strategies
Fathia emphasized thorough preparation as key to her success. Her approach included:
- Comprehensive Research: Understanding each scholarship's specific focus—whether leadership, academic excellence, or background.
- Tailored Applications: Crafting unique statements of purpose that reflected scholarship requirements without using AI-generated content.
- Coherent Storytelling: Ensuring application essays flowed naturally with compelling hooks and logical paragraph transitions.
- Exam Preparation: Studying past questions for scholarships requiring tests rather than relying on hope.
Actionable Advice for Undergraduate Students
Fathia offered practical steps for students seeking scholarships:
1. Find Reliable Opportunity Sources: She recommends Scholar World and iCanStudent as genuine, free platforms for scholarship information.
2. Organize Requirements Systematically: Copy scholarship requirements to personal chats, ticking off completed items to identify missing documents quickly.
3. Build Lecturer Relationships Early: Establish rapport with lecturers before needing recommendation letters. When requesting letters, provide:
- A concise 3-paragraph formal request
- Transcript attachment
- Clear deadline information
- Specific collection arrangements
4. Apply Early and Carefully: Submit applications during the first or second week of opening periods with prepared documents. "Take your time to fill every detail carefully before you submit. Don't rush it. Your application deserves your best," Fathia advised.
5. Maintain Authenticity: Even when using AI for structure, ensure essays reflect personal stories. "Nobody can tell your story better than you can," she emphasized.
Fathia Raji's journey demonstrates that persistence, preparation, and authenticity can overcome numerous rejections to achieve scholarship success. Her story serves as both inspiration and practical guide for Nigerian students navigating the competitive scholarship landscape.
