University of Abuja Announces Automatic Employment for Top Graduates During Combined Convocation Ceremonies

The University of Abuja, which has recently been renamed Yakubu Gowon University, has unveiled a significant new incentive aimed at rewarding academic excellence as it prepares for its combined 29th and 30th convocation ceremonies. Vice Chancellor Professor Hakeem Fawehinmi made the announcement during a comprehensive media briefing held at the university's main campus, detailing plans that include automatic employment opportunities for the institution's highest-achieving graduates.

Convocation Details and Graduation Statistics

The convocation events are scheduled to take place from April 10 to April 18, 2026, with the main ceremonies set for Friday, April 17, for first degrees and Saturday, April 18, for higher degrees and the conferment of honorary doctorates. A total of 12,624 students are poised to graduate from the 2022 to 2024 academic sessions, comprising 7,158 graduates from the 2022 to 2023 session and 5,466 from the 2023 to 2024 session.

"Overall, a total of 12,624 students will graduate. As part of our commitment to the development and advancement of our graduates, the overall best graduating students of both sets will be given automatic employment in the university," stated Vice Chancellor Fawehinmi.

Convocation Activities and Honorary Awards

The convocation programme features a diverse range of activities designed to celebrate academic achievement and address contemporary issues. Scheduled events include:

  • A Juma'at prayer and an interdenominational church service
  • An innovation showcase by various faculties
  • A drug awareness lecture
  • A dialogue on climate change
  • A convocation lecture focusing on artificial intelligence in financial technology

Three prominent Nigerians will receive honorary doctorate degrees during the ceremonies: Yusuff Ali, Paul Odili, and Emmanuel Iza, recognizing their contributions to society and various fields.

Infrastructure Expansion and Institutional Challenges

Vice Chancellor Fawehinmi provided insights into the university's current status and future plans, noting that the institution currently hosts nearly 40,000 students with projections indicating growth to 50,000 by 2030. He emphasized the urgent need for infrastructure expansion to support this anticipated growth.

"There is a sense in which we can tell Nigerians that this federal university needs massive expansion of infrastructure to become the University of our dreams," he explained.

The Vice Chancellor also addressed past leadership instability at the institution, acknowledging that three Acting Vice-Chancellors served within a short period, which contributed to institutional challenges. "The fact that we had three Acting Vice-Chancellors within a short period explains this crisis. We are glad that now, the storm is over," he stated.

Ongoing developments highlighted during the briefing include:

  1. Construction of new administrative buildings
  2. Improvements to laboratory facilities
  3. Plans for additional student accommodation through public-private partnerships
  4. Staff promotions and research progress

Fawehinmi also expressed concerns regarding funding limitations and land encroachment issues while maintaining optimism about the university's future growth and development prospects.
