UNIJOS Suspends Fundraising for Abducted Ex-Student, Assures Rescue Efforts
The management of the University of Jos (UNIJOS) has officially suspended all fundraising activities that were initiated to support the rescue of its former student, John Azi. Azi, a graduate of Early Childhood Education, was abducted by armed gunmen last Saturday while traveling to Kaduna State for work. This decision comes amid escalating concerns over the safety and well-being of the victim, who has been held captive for several days.
Ransom Demands and Assault Video Surface
Family sources disclosed to reporters on Tuesday that the kidnappers initially demanded a ransom of N30 million for Azi's release. However, this amount was later reduced to N5 million, accompanied by additional conditions that have not been publicly disclosed. The situation gained widespread attention on social media platforms after a video, allegedly released by the abductors, began circulating. This video purportedly shows the victim being assaulted, sparking outrage and calls for urgent action from the public and university community.
University Confirms Incident and Reports to Authorities
In a circular issued on Tuesday, the Dean of Student Affairs at UNIJOS, Christopher Piwuna, confirmed that the university has verified the abduction incident. He stated that the institution promptly reported the matter to the relevant security authorities to ensure a coordinated response. Piwuna emphasized that the university is working closely with security agencies to secure the safe rescue of John Azi, highlighting the collaborative efforts being undertaken to address this critical situation.
Call for Calm and Support
Piwuna further appealed to all students to remain calm during this challenging time. He urged them to keep the affected student in their thoughts and prayers while the appropriate security agencies work diligently towards his safe rescue. The suspension of fundraising activities is intended to prevent any potential complications or misinformation, allowing the focus to remain squarely on the rescue operations and official channels of support.
This incident underscores the ongoing security challenges in the region and the importance of community solidarity in times of crisis.
