UNILAG Elevates Dr. Sheyi Kehnny to Full Professor in Music
The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has officially promoted Dr. Oluwaseyi Kehinde Ezekiel, widely recognized as Sheyi Kehnny (DSK), to the esteemed rank of Professor in the Music Unit of the Department of Creative Arts. This significant elevation marks a major milestone in the academic and professional journey of a figure celebrated for his multifaceted contributions to music scholarship and performance.
A Distinguished Career in Academia and Music
Dr. Ezekiel, who previously served as an Associate Professor, has built an illustrious career characterized by academic rigor and artistic innovation. He holds the unique distinction of being the first Ph.D. graduate produced by the Music Unit at UNILAG, underscoring his foundational role in the department's development. His academic credentials include advanced training at Trinity College of Music in London, as well as certifications in entrepreneurship, leadership, and consultancy from Iowa State University in the United States and the University of Lagos.
Beyond his teaching and research roles, Kehnny has held key administrative positions, including Sub-Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Chairman of Culture and Ethics at UNILAG. Born in Lagos State with roots in Oyo State, his career seamlessly bridges scholarly excellence and practical musicianship.
Renowned as a Music Practitioner and Mentor
Sheyi Kehnny is widely regarded as one of Africa's finest bass guitarists, known for his exceptional ability to interpret complex contemporary and art music with precision. Over the years, he has performed alongside prominent Nigerian and international artists such as Onyeka Onwenu, Orlando Julius, Daddy Showkey, Panam Percy Paul, Kenny Saint Brown, Kunle Ajayi, Mike Aremu, Yinka Davies, Dunsin Oyekan, and Brodashaggi.
Currently, he serves as the Music Director of Daystar Christian Centre, where his leadership significantly influences contemporary gospel music performance in Nigeria. His mentorship has also shaped several successful figures in the entertainment industry, including Brodashaggi, Mo'Cheddah, Helen Paul, and Officer Woos.
Prolific Research and International Recognition
As a prolific researcher, Professor Kehnny has authored over 40 scholarly publications in both national and international journals and has presented papers at conferences across Nigeria and the United States. His research excellence has earned him notable recognitions, such as the Best Researcher Award at the University of Lagos International Research Fair and a Ph.D. Research Grant that supported part of his doctoral work at Western Carolina University in the USA.
His international collaborations include performances organized by the American Consulate and a landmark musical engagement with a 60-man American Navy Band during their 2023 visit to Nigeria, highlighting his global impact.
