LAWMA and EU Partners Intensify Efforts for Sustainable Construction Waste Management in Lagos
The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), in collaboration with partners backed by the European Union, has significantly ramped up initiatives to address the mounting issue of construction and demolition waste. This push is centered around the Green Waste Remediation and Recycling (GROW) vocational training workshop, a key event held at the LCCI Conference and Exhibition Centre in Ikeja. The workshop convened a diverse group of policymakers, industry stakeholders, academics, and development partners to tackle the escalating challenge of construction waste in Lagos, a city experiencing rapid urbanization.
Strategic Intervention to Bridge Skill Gaps
Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, emphasized that this initiative serves as a strategic intervention designed to bridge technical skill gaps and realign construction waste management with global best practices. Represented by Mr Kunle Adebiyi, the Authority's Executive Director of Finance, Gbadegesin highlighted that the GROW project actively supports the green transformation of the construction sector. This is achieved by promoting sustainable waste practices, enhancing technical capacity, and fostering robust collaboration among government bodies, training institutions, and industry players.
He further detailed that the project, co-funded by the European Union under the ERASMUS+ programme, specifically targets Nigeria and Mozambique as key economies grappling with increasing construction waste challenges. LAWMA is actively strengthening the management of Construction, Demolition and Disaster Waste (CDDW) to ensure efficient handling from generation to disposal, while simultaneously unlocking significant opportunities for recycling and resource recovery. Gbadegesin also underscored that this initiative will bolster skills development, create new job opportunities, and accelerate the transition to a circular waste management system.
Timely Workshop and Collaborative Efforts
In her remarks, Project Coordinator Isabel Goncalves described the workshop as exceptionally timely, noting that the GROW project aims to deliver practical, skills-based solutions to the rising volume of construction waste. She added that it will strengthen workforce capacity, improve waste management outcomes, and promote deeper collaboration among all stakeholders. The event saw active participation from representatives of industry groups, waste management associations, academia, and private sector partners, fostering a comprehensive dialogue on sustainable practices.
The workshop featured in-depth technical sessions and breakout discussions focused on skills gap assessment and workforce development. Participants proposed innovative strategies to enhance recycling, reuse, and overall efficiency in construction waste management. Stakeholders unanimously reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening partnerships, enhancing policy implementation, and advancing sustainable construction waste practices not only in Lagos but also beyond, setting a precedent for other urban areas facing similar environmental challenges.
