WAEC Unveils Digital Certificate Platform Across Five Member Nations

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially launched its new Digital Certificate Services System, known as WAEC DigiCert, across all five of its member countries. This innovative platform is now operational in Nigeria, Ghana, The Gambia, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, marking a significant step forward in modernizing educational credentials in the region.

Enhanced Access and Security for Candidates

Demianus Ojijeogu, Head of Public Affairs at WAEC Headquarters in Accra, Ghana, announced the rollout on Monday, February 16, 2026, on behalf of the Registrar. He emphasized that the WAEC DigiCert platform is a mobile and web-based application designed to provide candidates with easy access to digital versions of their original certificates. According to Ojijeogu, this system allows users to efficiently obtain, verify, and share digital copies of their certificates with educational institutions and employers worldwide.

The platform also includes features for recovering lost WAEC examination numbers, ensuring that candidates can securely manage their credentials without unnecessary delays. Ojijeogu highlighted that the digital service enhances authenticity, reduces costs, and minimizes the hassles associated with manual certificate issuance and collection processes.

Physical Certificates Remain Available

Officials have clarified that the introduction of the WAEC DigiCert platform does not eliminate the availability of physical certificates. The council will continue to print and distribute traditional paper certificates, offering candidates flexibility in how they access their academic records. The public is encouraged to download the app or visit WAEC's official website and social media pages for further details and instructions on using the new digital service.

Related Developments in WAEC Examinations

In a related development, WAEC has released the final timetable for the 2026 Computer-Based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (CB-WASSCE) for private candidates. This examination series, the first of the year, is scheduled to commence on January 28, 2026, starting with Nigerian languages. Core subjects such as Mathematics and English will be administered in late January and early February across designated computer-based testing centers nationwide.

WAEC has advised candidates to carefully review the timetable, adhere to all guidelines, and prepare adequately for the computer-based format. This shift to digital assessments aims to modernize the examination process, improve efficiency, and combat examination malpractice within Nigeria's evolving educational landscape.

Broader Educational Trends in West Africa

The launch of the WAEC DigiCert platform coincides with other significant trends in West African education. Recent data from the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) indicates that Lagos State University has emerged as the most sought-after institution for the 2026 admission cycle, reflecting strong applicant preferences for urban campuses and diverse academic programs. Additionally, the 2026 ranking of West Africa's top universities highlights leading institutions in Nigeria and Ghana, emphasizing academic excellence and research output.

Education analysts suggest that these developments, including the digital certificate initiative, could influence student choices, funding priorities, and policy reforms across the region. As governments and institutions invest in technology and infrastructure, the goal is to enhance global competitiveness and attract international students to West African higher education systems.
