Africa's First Regenerative Fashion Manifesto Launched at Lagos Fashion Week

Africa Unveils Landmark Blueprint for Regenerative Fashion

Lagos Fashion Week, a 2025 Earthshot Prize winner, has launched 'The Blueprint for a Regenerative Fashion Future,' the manifesto of the African Fashion Coalition, in partnership with The Earthshot Prize during London Climate Action Week. The declaration positions Africa as a leader in shaping a regenerative, inclusive, and climate-responsive future for fashion.

At a time when the global fashion industry faces mounting pressure to address climate change, waste, inequality, and unsustainable production, the Manifesto offers a distinctly African perspective rooted in centuries of knowledge, craftsmanship, circularity, and community-led innovation.

Addressing the Ownership Gap in Fashion Value Chains

The Manifesto highlights a critical imbalance: Africa exports approximately US$15 billion of raw textiles annually but imports over US$23 billion of finished clothing and footwear. It argues this is not a gap in talent but a gap in ownership that must be filled to retain value on the continent.

Developed through convenings, workshops, and stakeholder engagements led by Lagos Fashion Week and The Earthshot Prize, the Manifesto reflects the collective thinking of the African Fashion Coalition—a community of fashion leaders, sustainability advocates, researchers, educators, artisans, and entrepreneurs.

Ten Pillars for a Sustainable Future

The Manifesto is structured around ten interconnected pillars: fashion as cultural heritage and living knowledge; circularity as foundation; community-led creation and inclusive prosperity; cultural sustainability and intellectual property protection; waste justice and global accountability; local production and economic sovereignty; climate-responsive and regenerative innovation; market access and platform power; infrastructure and systems; and conscious consumption and behavioral change.

These pillars provide a framework for strengthening systems, partnerships, and investments needed to support a regenerative, inclusive, and resilient fashion future across Africa.

Voices from the Coalition

Omoyemi Akerele, Founder and Executive Director of Lagos Fashion Week, said: 'The Blueprint for a Regenerative Fashion Future reflects a shared vision embedded in African realities. For generations, Africa has supplied materials, craftsmanship, and creativity while capturing little value. The Manifesto frames this not as a talent gap but an ownership gap, calling for investment, infrastructure, and equitable value sharing.'

Simone Smit, Director of Africa at The Earthshot Prize, added: 'Africa is not just participating in the global environmental movement—it's leading it. Earthshot solutions are at the heart of this. Lagos Fashion Week's role in shaping the Manifesto demonstrates that the most impactful solutions combine innovation with local knowledge.'

Open for Endorsement
