EMCOAN Induction Boosts Creative Industry Standards in Nigeria

EMCOAN Induction Sets Tone for Creative Industry Advancement

The Electronic Media Content Owners Association of Nigeria (EMCOAN) recently held a significant induction ceremony, marking a pivotal moment for the nation's creative sector. The event, which took place at the Gallery Hall of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Ikeja, Lagos, saw the swearing-in of Wale Adenuga as grand patron and Yinka Adebayo as patron, underscoring a commitment to unity and innovation among stakeholders.

Strengthening Industry Standards and Unity

During the ceremony, EMCOAN welcomed back old members, reviewed its constitution, and handed over a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to the Director General of the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON), Dr. Olalekan Fadolapo. The association also honored several individuals for their dedication and support over the years. Opa Williams, Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BOT) for EMCOAN, highlighted the association's 14-year journey, noting that it comprises over 80 members who supply 75% of electronic media content in Nigeria. He emphasized that the induction aims to improve operational standards, production quality, and discipline, with all inductees meeting a high level of criteria.

The President of EMCOAN expressed gratitude for the unity within the association, thanking key figures such as Chief Wale Adenuga, Dr. Opa Williams, President Emeritus Jibe Ologeh, Madam Agatha, Madam Debbie Odutayo, and Chief Emeka Ossai for their positive roles. He proudly stated that the EMCOAN family is now united under one umbrella, fostering collaboration and progress.

Regulatory Insights and Content Advocacy

Dr. Olalekan Fadolapo, Director General of ARCON, addressed the gathering, appealing to content creators to amplify Nigerian narratives through local content. He stressed the importance of obtaining approval from the Advertising Standards Panel before exposing advertisements in programs to prevent unsubstantiated and fraudulent claims. Fadolapo commended the unity displayed by EMCOAN and encouraged continued teamwork to advance the industry, reminding attendees of their shared responsibility to promote excellence, accountability, and innovation.

Yinka Adebayo, also the Group Executive Director at Omnicom for West and Central Africa, provided insights into the media landscape. He pointed out that Nigeria's population of 230 million people is adventurous and seeks content, but streaming platforms currently benefit the most. Adebayo advocated for empowering, supporting, and encouraging terrestrial platforms, as they do not require data access and can deliver a vast audience. He emphasized that content drives viewership, not just station loyalty, and called for efforts to enhance terrestrial content delivery.

Call for Regulation in Content Creation

Adebayo further discussed the need to regulate the content creation arm of the creative sector. With both trained and untrained individuals entering content creation, he argued for establishing standards to ensure quality production. He proposed monitoring and encouraging creators, celebrating those who adhere to best practices, and implementing a reward mechanism. Adebayo suggested that a regulatory framework, akin to a "big brother" oversight, could help maintain integrity and foster growth in the industry.

This induction event not only reinforced EMCOAN's role in shaping Nigeria's creative industry but also set a forward-looking agenda focused on standards, unity, and regulatory compliance to drive sustainable development.
