The National Troupe amphitheatre, located within the Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and Creative Arts in Lagos, became a lively hub of motion last weekend as the troupe hosted the World Dance Day. The event showcased a powerful display of artistry, turning the venue into a center of creative energy and rhythmic storytelling.
Collaborative Spirit and Partnerships
Moving beyond tradition, the 2026 edition stood out for its remarkable collaborative spirit. The event was organized in partnership with a robust lineup of creative pillars, including the Lagos State Arts Council, the Guild of Nigerian Dancers (GOND), and several dynamic collectives such as Wao Factor, Gifted Steppers, Tribe 1, Black Edge, Funso Arts, and Jayden Expression.
The atmosphere was electric, drawing a diverse audience of dancers, cultural icons, theatre practitioners, academics, and dedicated supporters of the troupe. The evening was further enriched by inspiring messages from theatre practitioners who underscored the importance of dance as both an art form and a cultural force.
Key Speakers and Performances
Among the notable speakers were Segun Adefila, National President of GOND; Tairu Ajibode, National Secretary of GOND; Isioma Williams, National President of the Guild of Theatre Drummers (GOTHAD); and Dr. Yeside Lawal from the Department of Theatre Arts at Lagos State University (LASU).
While World Dance Day serves as a global tribute to the universal language of movement, the troupe’s 2026 showcase added a uniquely hopeful dimension. A major highlight of the evening was the extraordinary performances by children and teenagers, signaling a vibrant and promising future for professional dance in Nigeria.
