In a significant recognition of his advocacy work, former Senator Shehu Sani has been honoured with a prestigious award by a coalition of women activists from northern Nigeria.
Northern Women's Group Presents Maiden Award
Women activists from 19 northern states, operating under the banner of Women’s Voices for Northern Nigeria (WVNN), bestowed their inaugural Freedom Fighter Award on the former lawmaker. The ceremony took place in Kaduna on 4 January 2026, where Senator Sani was named the Best Freedom Fighter for the year 2025.
Recognition for Unwavering Advocacy
Presenting the award, the National President of WVNN, Comrade Jamila Malumfashi, stated that the former senator was selected based on his consistent and vocal defence of society's marginalised groups. She highlighted his long-standing commitment to speaking up for the poor, the oppressed, and women across the region.
"Senator Shehu Sani has consistently used his voice to defend the poor, the oppressed, and women. His commitment to social justice and equity informed our decision to honour him as the first recipient of this award," Malumfashi explained during the event.
Focus on Women's Empowerment
Malumfashi detailed that her organisation works across the 19 states of northern Nigeria with a primary focus on empowering women. Their initiatives specifically target widows, orphans, and unemployed women who often depend on others for survival.
In his acceptance speech, Senator Sani, who represented Kaduna Central in the defunct 8th National Assembly, expressed deep gratitude for the honour. He commended WVNN for its practical programmes aimed at boosting the economic status of northern women through skill acquisition and empowerment.
"I am encouraged by your commitment to empowering women through skills and self-reliance. This is the right path to sustainable development," the former lawmaker remarked.
A Pledge of Support and Advice
Senator Sani pledged his personal support to help the women's group expand its reach and facilitate access to support from relevant government and development agencies. However, he offered a crucial piece of advice, urging the organisation to maintain a strong focus on empowerment initiatives rather than diverting energy into partisan political activities.
The award event attracted numerous women leaders and stakeholders from across the northern region. Attendees described the honour as a well-deserved recognition of Senator Sani's long-standing advocacy for social justice and inclusive governance in Nigeria.
