Bashir El-Rufai, the son of former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, has issued a public apology for how he announced the breakdown of his marriage to his ex-wife, Halima Nwakaego Kazaure. The apology was posted on his X account on Saturday, June 13, 2026.
"I made a mistake a few weeks ago and I would like to apologize. Personal matters should be kept private," he wrote. He also claimed to have apologized to Halima directly.
Bashir and Halima, daughter of former Minister of Labour and Productivity Ibrahim Kazaure, married in 2020 and welcomed twins the following year. Bashir had previously announced the end of the marriage on X, citing "Gen Z wahala." This came after his public admiration for another woman prompted users to remind him he was married.
"I'm not married yet. I am divorced. Yes, she's from Bida, and yes, I divorced my first wife (I have no time for Gen Z wahala)," he wrote. "The difference is clear, I had no clue Nupe women treat their husbands like emperors. Loving it." He also revealed that he had never wooed any woman, adding that Halima proposed to him. "I don't toast, babes. Never have. It's not even about bragging rights or pride. Neither have I ever used money to buy companionship. Sometimes it's even years later that I discover one babe or another likes. I can't tell. They make the first move. I also never asked a girl to marry me. Even in my 1st, she was the one who proposed. Not to impress anyone, but that's the fact."
