Kanye West Faces Legal Action Over Alleged Restaurant Assault

American rapper Kanye West, who now goes by the name Ye, has been named in a new lawsuit accusing him of a violent sucker-punch attack at a Los Angeles restaurant. The legal complaint, filed on Monday in Los Angeles and obtained by Rolling Stone, details a shocking incident that allegedly occurred on April 16, 2024.

Details of the Alleged Attack

The plaintiff, who is suing anonymously as John Doe due to security concerns and to prevent further reputational damage, claims he was sitting with his brother in the outdoor garden of a private venue around 11 p.m. when West allegedly blindsided him with a punch. According to the filing, the attack was completely unprovoked.

The complaint states: "Without warning, defendant punched plaintiff in the face. The punch knocked plaintiff to the ground where he hit his head and lost consciousness. Defendant then repeatedly punched plaintiff as he lay unconscious on the ground, with the intent to cause physical harm."

The lawsuit describes the incident as a "cowardly attack" that was both shocking and physically harmful. It alleges that West showed malice by continuing to strike the plaintiff while he was unconscious and then fleeing to the protection of his security detail, leaving the injured man lying on the concrete floor.

Aftermath and False Accusations

The plaintiff required medical treatment following the alleged assault. In the days after the incident, the lawsuit claims that West "falsely accused" the man of inappropriate conduct with a woman in his entourage and then "repeated and embellished these lies" on a widely viewed podcast.

This dissemination of what the plaintiff calls falsehoods allegedly fueled public scorn, suspicion, and ridicule against him. The filing insists that evidence, including video recordings from the scene, proves the plaintiff did not engage in any inappropriate conduct.

"The falsehoods, made with reckless disregard for the devastating impact they would have on plaintiff's personal, professional and emotional well-being, constitutes extreme and outrageous conduct beyond all bounds of decency tolerated in a civilized society," the lawsuit states.

Legal Strategy and Response

The plaintiff's lawyer, Robert Shapiro, told Rolling Stone that "the complaint speaks for itself" and explained that his client filed anonymously in hopes of resolving the matter with minimal attention.

"We wanted to give everyone the opportunity to see if the matter could be solved or resolved confidentially in mediation," Shapiro said. "My policy is to try to resolve matters. If we can do them confidentially, I think it's in everyone's interest, and we'll give people that opportunity."

The lawsuit specifically denies any provocation from either the plaintiff or his brother, stating: "Plaintiff did nothing at all to provoke it. Plaintiff's brother did not engage in any offensive or inappropriate conduct toward any woman in defendant's party earlier that evening, or at any time. This is not a case of mistaken identity in which defendant attacked the wrong brother. Neither brother engaged in any wrongful conduct at any time."
