Kiekie Opens Up on Motherhood, Fame, Privacy and Life Behind Laughter

Oluwabukunmi Adeaga-Ilori, widely known as Kiekie, is a multi-talented media personality—host, content creator, actor, entrepreneur—who rose from a fashion background to become one of Nigeria's most beloved online figures. In an exclusive interview with Guardian Life, she shares her thoughts on motherhood, fame, privacy, and the values that guide her life.

Motherhood: Her Favourite Role

When asked which version of herself she prefers—actress, host, entrepreneur, or mother—Kiekie likens herself to an onion with many layers. While she loves hosting and acting, she declares: “If I have to choose, Kiekie the mum is my favourite version of Kiekie.” She describes her daughter Nola as her biggest teacher, imparting lessons on honesty and truth that she never expected from a three-year-old.

From Fashion to Comedy

Kiekie's career began in fashion in 2008 while studying at Bowen University. She launched Accost Collection after her school changed its dress code, and later turned customer stories about tailors into viral content. Her comedy breakthrough came in 2020 when Mr Macaroni invited her to appear in a skit. The overwhelming response led her to create her own skits, and she has since published over 500 skits. She notes, “I don't think it was a risk because the people were already waiting for me.”

Balancing Trends and Authenticity

Kiekie explains that trends come naturally to her due to her love for fashion, dance, and culture, but authenticity remains key. “Three things define my brand: I am spontaneous, authentic and genuine,” she says. She ensures that even when jumping on a trend, she infuses her unique touch.

Motherhood's Impact and the Kiekie Mums Foundation

Motherhood has taught her to respect individuality. She recalls realizing her daughter simply didn't like the colour orange, and instead of forcing it, she embraced her preference. This lesson extended to founding the Kiekie Mums Foundation, which supports new mothers and young parents. The inspiration came from her own overwhelming postpartum experience despite having a strong support system.

Privacy and Disconnecting from Fame

Despite her fame, Kiekie says she often forgets she is famous. She keeps her marriage and husband offline, stating, “That part of my life is what is most dear to me, and it is personal.” She also does not force her daughter into content; Nola creates content on her own volition, mirroring the freedom Kiekie's parents gave her.

Core Values: Truth and Financial Discipline

Growing up, truth was non-negotiable in her household. “My father did not tolerate lies, and that value shaped me a lot,” she says. Another lesson from her parents: “Any money that is not in your hand is not your money.” This has kept her grounded and prevented her from chasing unsustainable luxury. She advises young people to enjoy big things only if they can afford them without destroying their peace.

Current Chapter and Legacy

Kiekie feels all layers of her identity—host, actor, content creator, businesswoman—are fully established. She has worked with major brands in Nigeria and abroad, and her acting credits include titles on Prime Video, Netflix, and cinemas. “Now it is time to scale,” she says. Her desired legacy is simple: “I want people to think about me and be happy. I want them to come across my platforms and laugh. I just want people to be happy.”
