Kjell Nilsson, the Swedish actor best known for portraying the main antagonist Lord Humungus in the 1981 film Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior, has died at the age of 76. He passed away peacefully in his sleep on July 2 in Queensland, Australia, after a prolonged battle with end-stage kidney disease, according to a statement posted to his official Facebook page.
Health Struggles and Final Decision
The statement revealed that Nilsson had been undergoing dialysis three times a week for the past four and a half years. "It was a long and painful journey, filled with countless battles to overcome, including the gradual loss of his bodily autonomy," the post read. On the Sunday before his death, after much consideration, Nilsson made the decision to stop dialysis to take back control over his pain and his body. The message added: "The days leading up to his passing were filled with joy, gratitude, peace, and acceptance. He did it his way."
In 2022, medical professionals had told Nilsson he would not survive past his first Christmas after kidney failure. However, he defied expectations, celebrating four more Christmases and gaining four precious extra years with his loved ones.
Career and Athletic Background
Nilsson initially moved to Australia in 1980 to train for the Moscow Olympics in weight lifting. There, he met actress Kate Ferguson, whom he married in Sweden. She convinced him to return to Australia to pursue a film career. Besides his iconic role in Mad Max 2, Nilsson appeared in The Pirate Movie (1982), the TV movie Man of Letters (1984), and played a nurse in The Edge of Power (1987).
Tributes and Memorial
The announcement concluded by thanking Nilsson's friends, fans, clients, and family for making his life richer and fuller. A ceremony to honor his memory will be announced at a later date. Fans have taken to X (formerly Twitter) to share fond memories of the actor.
