Gospel singer and convener of the Hallelujah Challenge, Pastor Nathaniel Bassey, has expressed deep sorrow over the recent abduction of schoolchildren and their teachers in Oyo State, condemning what he described as widespread indifference among Nigerians.
Speaking at a church programme, Bassey questioned how citizens could continue with normal social activities while 42 children remain in captivity. He noted that in other countries, all military resources would be deployed to rescue even a single child.
Bassey Recalls Vision of Attacks in the South
The gospel minister reminded his audience of a vision he shared during the February 2026 Hallelujah Challenge, where he foresaw armed groups invading the South-West. He had called for prayers for mercy at that time, despite facing criticism.
“How can 42 children be in captivity and we are still partying? And we are still normal?” Bassey lamented. He pointed out that even after Children’s Day, the victims remain in captivity, with one teacher killed and another threatened with beheading.
He added: “It’s as if our consciences have been seared. Do you know that days after Children’s Day, we still have our children in captivity?”
Call for Anger and Action
Bassey urged his congregation to be angry in their spirits, both at the terrorists and at politicians who show indifference. He prayed for God to uproot those responsible.
Social media users reacted strongly to his comments. User @sar_tomi wrote: “It’s more than 42 now oh, my heart wrenches. Let’s all imagine this is any of our own children.”
Another user, @gistmilltv_, stated: “That question is difficult to ignore. When dozens of children are missing and in captivity, it should concern all of us, regardless of tribe, religion, or politics.”
User @freesmurk94 commented: “Even if we pray for mercy and the government does nothing about insecurity, we are still going to be facing the same problem. We need competent leadership who can fight insecurity.”
Background on the Abduction
The abduction occurred on May 15, 2026, in Oyo State, where armed men seized schoolchildren and their teachers. Since then, one teacher has been killed, and the kidnappers have threatened to behead another. The incident has sparked nationwide outrage and calls for improved security.
Nathaniel Bassey’s remarks come amid growing frustration over the government’s response to insecurity in Nigeria. The gospel singer has previously used his platform to address national issues, including his Hallelujah Challenge prayer movement.
