Omah Lay Speaks Out on Viral Dance That Led to Couple's Breakup
In a revealing new interview with FADER, Grammy-nominated Afrobeats sensation Omah Lay has addressed the controversial viral dance moment from his February 2024 London concert that reportedly caused a couple to break up. The Port Harcourt-born singer expressed strong opinions about the boyfriend's reaction to the incident, which involved Omah Lay dancing suggestively with a female fan on stage.
"He Should Be Happy for Her": Omah Lay's Perspective
Omah Lay revealed he was "pissed" at the boyfriend's response to the dance routine during his performance of the steamy single 'Bend You.' Contrary to expectations that he might express sympathy for the boyfriend, the singer instead criticized the man's behavior as disappointing and insecure.
"I was pissed at the guy for a minute," Omah Lay told FADER. "This is a girl who had a chance to be on stage with one of her favorite artists. This is a life-changing opportunity. If I were him, I'd be recording it and being happy for my girl."
The singer emphasized that the dance was a brief artistic moment, lasting "one minute max," and that the boyfriend overreacted by acting like "someone wanted to steal his girl" and portraying himself as a victim.
Defending the Dance as Artistic Expression
Omah Lay firmly defended the controversial dance as art, despite the sexually suggestive nature that brought the boyfriend internet mockery and unwanted attention. He questioned why the boyfriend couldn't simply enjoy the moment, especially since the fan would return to him after the song ended.
"She's coming back to you after the song is over! It's art," Omah Lay stated. "Why don't you just enjoy it? But he was acting like a victim, like somebody 'took his girl.' That just shows that you guys don't have anything concrete."
The singer expressed disappointment that the boyfriend couldn't appreciate what he considered a special opportunity for his partner, adding: "We're just dancing in front of 10,000 people. It's art. Why are you dying over that feeling like a victim?"
Online Reactions and Additional Revelations
The viral dance routine and subsequent breakup have generated significant online discussion, with some observers criticizing Omah Lay's stance as insensitive to the boyfriend's experience of public ridicule. However, the singer maintains his position that the boyfriend mishandled the situation.
During the same interview, Omah Lay also made headlines by revealing that a top Afrobeats artist stole his sound, forcing him to create his new album 'Clarity of Mind' from scratch. He described how the artist "twisted the sound in a genius way" that made it impossible for him to claim ownership.
"Stuff like that can put people in a bad mental state where they are unable to 'come back alive,'" Omah Lay explained. "You spend so much time figuring out a new sound, you share it with a friend for a collaboration, and they twist it in such a genius way that you can't even go back and say, 'Yo, this is my sh*t.'"
The singer recently released his sophomore LP 'Clarity of Mind' after over two years of anticipation, boasting that it would prove he's the greatest artist of his generation. The album comes amidst both the dance controversy and his revelations about creative theft within the industry.
