Former Anambra State Governor and presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has paid glowing tribute to two distinguished Nigerians, describing their lives as enduring examples of service, leadership, and nation-building.
Birthday Celebrations for Two Elders
Obi spoke after attending the birthday celebrations of Nnaemeka Alfred Ugochukwu Achebe, the Obi of Onitsha, who marked his 85th birthday, and Yomi Edu, who turned 80. Reflecting on his relationship with the revered monarch, Obi said he worked closely with Achebe throughout his eight years as governor and witnessed firsthand his commitment to good governance, cultural preservation, and community development.
A Symbol of Dignity and Enterprise
He described the traditional ruler as a symbol of dignity, enterprise, and responsible leadership whose reign continues to strengthen Nigeria's rich cultural heritage. The NDC presidential candidate also hailed Edu for his years of public service and contributions to both the corporate and public sectors, noting that his legacy remains worthy of recognition and celebration.
Eminent Personalities Attend
According to Obi, the event drew an array of eminent personalities from Nigeria and beyond, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, senior government officials, captains of industry, former governors, and other distinguished guests from across Africa. He said the gathering reflected the deep respect earned by the celebrants over decades of dedicated service and highlighted the importance of honouring individuals who have made significant contributions to national development.
Reminder of Integrity and Service
Obi added that occasions such as these serve as reminders of the value of integrity, longevity, and selfless service, while offering an opportunity to celebrate those whose lives have positively impacted society. He prayed for continued good health, strength, and many more years of fulfilment for both elder statesmen.
