Presidential aide Dada Olusegun has called out Nigerian content creator and comedian Nasboi over a viral video posted on X, accusing him of spreading fear-mongering content. Olusegun, Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Social Media, addressed the issue on Tuesday via his official X handle.
According to Olusegun, the video shared by Nasboi did not originate from Nigeria and was wrongly framed to mislead viewers about the country's security situation. He clarified that the footage had been linked to a foreign source identifying armed men as terrorists operating in the Republic of Benin.
Olusegun stressed that Nigeria faces security challenges but warned that spreading unverified or wrongly framed content could worsen public anxiety. He accused Nasboi of using his wide online reach irresponsibly, stating, "You cannot continue to intentionally use your page to spread fear @iamnasboi for whatever reason you might think you have."
The clip, originally attributed to a page identifying the individuals as Beninese terrorists, showed armed men on motorcycles attacking a rural area. Many viewers initially assumed it was from Nigeria. Nasboi had shared the video with a caption referencing the President, drawing widespread attention.
Reactions from social media users were mixed. User @HorlarJhidey questioned the government's response, asking, "If your claim is true, Benin is our neighbouring country. What is ECOWAS doing about this? Are Nigerian borders strong enough to prevent these guys from entering Nigeria?" Another user, @keemside, called for legal action against Nasboi, saying, "The government can arrest him for spreading fake news and send him to jail without option of fine. This way, others will learn better."
The debate has fueled fresh concerns about content responsibility and the impact of fear-driven online posts. The presidency's message underscores the need for verified information, especially from influential figures.
Meanwhile, Nasboi has previously stirred reactions online by sharing his dating preferences and financial expectations in relationships. He stated that he would not date certain categories of women, warning broke women to stay away from him.
