Ycee Decries 'Olodo Uprising' and 'Peller Culture'
Nigerian rapper Ycee has voiced strong concerns over what he calls an 'Olodo uprising' — a growing trend where ignorance is rewarded online while academic excellence is sidelined. Speaking during a podcast interview, the rapper argued that the country is gradually incentivizing foolish behavior at the expense of education.
Attack on the Educational System
Ycee pointed to insecurity, poor leadership, and a lack of priority for education as key factors behind the decline. 'There's a massive attack on the educational system in Nigeria,' he said, noting that many young people no longer see school as important because internet fame and quick money have become more attractive.
From Yahoo Culture to Peller Culture
The rapper distinguished between the older 'Yahoo culture' of internet fraud and a newer phenomenon he calls 'Peller culture.' 'It's not even just Yahoo culture. Now we have Peller culture,' he stated. He explained that society now rewards individuals for doing outrageous or controversial things online, sending a harmful message to impressionable youth.
Sustainability Questioned
'If we keep rewarding all these guys, people will think all they need to do is go online, do something crazy and get clicks and numbers. That's what moves the needle in Nigeria,' Ycee said. While he clarified that he has nothing personal against Peller and that everyone is free to make money, he questioned the long-term sustainability of such a path.
Call for Change
Ycee's remarks come amid growing debate about the influence of social media personalities on Nigerian youth. He urged a renewed focus on education and meaningful achievement over viral fame.
