African Women Creatives Make Historic Cannes Debut With 10-Nation Delegation
In a groundbreaking development for the global film industry, Women in Film and Television Africa (WIFT Africa) and Women in Film Los Angeles (WIF LA) have announced a historic initiative that will bring the largest-ever delegation of African women creatives to the 2026 Cannes Film Festival. This landmark collaboration represents a significant step forward for African representation on the world stage, with the delegation set to participate in the prestigious Marché du Film from May 12 to 20.
Unprecedented Continental Representation
The initiative will feature participants from ten diverse African nations, including Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Senegal, Cameroon, South Africa, Zambia, Rwanda, Uganda, and Côte d’Ivoire. This broad representation underscores the growing influence and expanding reach of Africa's creative economy across the continent. Organizers describe the move as both symbolic and strategic, specifically designed to strengthen the global positioning of African women working in film and television industries.
In a historic first for African representation at Cannes, WIFT Africa will host an official booth at the Marché du Film, providing a central platform for engagement with international stakeholders. This dedicated space is expected to serve as a dynamic hub where filmmakers, producers, investors, and distributors can connect directly with African talent and explore meaningful collaboration opportunities across the continent.
Building Sustainable Industry Frameworks
The collaboration between WIF LA and WIFT Africa has already yielded substantial results, leading to the establishment of seven national WIFT chapters across Africa in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Senegal, Cameroon, South Africa, and Zambia. Additional chapters are currently being planned for Rwanda, Uganda, and Côte d’Ivoire, further expanding the network's reach and deepening its impact throughout the continent. Representatives from all ten countries will form an integral part of the Cannes 2026 delegation, highlighting a unified continental presence.
Beyond symbolic representation, this comprehensive initiative is strategically designed to unlock tangible opportunities for African women filmmakers by providing enhanced access to international markets, financing options, and distribution channels. Africa's creative sector continues to experience rapid growth, with women playing increasingly central roles in shaping its future trajectory. By fostering global connections and building sustainable industry frameworks, this partnership aims to accelerate long-term growth and promote greater equity within the sector.
Prestigious Sponsorship and Producer Participation
As part of the ambitious program, WIF LA and WIFT Africa will serve as presenting sponsors of the Producers Network at the Marché du Film, one of the festival's most prestigious industry platforms. Five accomplished African women producers have been carefully selected to participate in this exclusive opportunity:
- Shirley Frimpong Manso of Ghana
- Nicolette Ndigwe-Kalu of Nigeria
- Bea Wangondu of Kenya
- Bongiwe Selane of South Africa
- Alexandra Amon of Côte d’Ivoire
Over six intensive days, these producers will engage directly with global industry leaders, financiers, and potential collaborators, creating valuable pathways for international partnerships and project development that could transform the African film landscape.
Leadership Perspectives and Industry Impact
President of WIFT Africa, Inya Lawal, described the initiative as a defining moment for African women in entertainment, emphasizing that the delegation represents a collective effort to reshape the narrative around African participation in the global film industry. "We are shifting from mere inclusion to genuine leadership and ownership," Lawal stated, highlighting the transformative potential of this initiative.
Similarly, WIF LA's Director of International Programs emphasized the importance of recognizing Africa and other emerging markets as key drivers of innovation and change within the global entertainment landscape. She noted that WIF LA's decades-long commitment to supporting women in film continues to demonstrate the transformative impact of strategic investment in female talent across international boundaries.

The delegation will include chapter presidents, executives, producers, and ecosystem partners from across the African continent. Participating organizations represent a diverse cross-section of the creative industry, including:
