Iyabo Ojo: 'I am President General of single mothers'

Veteran Nollywood actress and filmmaker, Iyabo Ojo, has made a powerful declaration about her life's journey, proclaiming herself the 'President General of single mothers.' She shared this heartfelt title during her annual New Year thanksgiving event, where she reflected on motherhood, personal growth, and resilience.

A Title Born from Personal Triumph

Addressing guests at the gathering, Iyabo Ojo explained that the title is a direct reflection of her own path, having raised her two children, Felix and Priscilla Ojo, single-handedly to success. 'My daughter has succeeded, my son has succeeded, my life is better,' she stated emphatically. 'That is why I say I am the President General of single mothers.' The actress, who is now a grandmother, also humorously described herself as the 'sexiest grandma ever.'

Her comments come after a landmark year for her family. In 2025, her daughter, Priscilla Ojo, married popular Tanzanian singer Juma Jux in widely publicized ceremonies in Nigeria and Tanzania. The couple later welcomed a baby boy, elevating Iyabo Ojo to grandmother status.

Reflections on Struggle and Unexpected Blessings

Looking back on her early years, the actress did not shy away from discussing the immense challenges she faced. 'When you are raising your children at a young age as I did, you will almost go mad,' she revealed. 'It is not easy.' She spoke about the emotional and mental strain of building a career in Nollywood while being a young mother.

Iyabo Ojo, born Alice Iyabo Ogunro on December 21, 1977, noted that many of her current blessings were once unimaginable. She specifically mentioned that if someone had told her years ago she would own property in Lekki, she would not have believed it.

Extending a Hand Beyond Her Family

Beyond her immediate family's success, Iyabo Ojo highlighted her significant philanthropic efforts, particularly in education. She made a stunning revelation about the scale of her support: 'From the two children that I gave birth to, I trained more than 1,000 kids in school.' This underscores her commitment to empowering others, a role that extends her 'President General' title beyond a personal achievement to a community leadership position.

The actress, whose career spans over two decades and includes roles in more than 150 movies, also shared wisdom on relationships and purpose. Speaking in pidgin, she said, 'As a woman, na man go leave you, na man go marry you. As a man, na woman go leave you, na woman go marry you,' stressing that while relationships may change, personal growth and purpose must remain constant.

Iyabo Ojo, who began acting in 1998 after registering with the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) with help from colleague Bimbo Akintola, remains one of the industry's most recognizable and outspoken figures, using her platform to address social issues and inspire many.
