Nollywood's Jamiu Azeez Fires Back at Critics Over Church Video: 'It Is My Life'
Jamiu Azeez Addresses Criticism Over Alleged Conversion

Popular Yoruba actor and filmmaker, Jamiu Azeez, has finally responded to the intense online criticism and speculation that he converted from Islam to Christianity. The controversy erupted after the star shared a video of himself attending a crossover service at a white garment church to welcome the New Year.

Social Media Storm Over Church Attendance

The actor broke his silence in a social media post on Sunday, January 4, 2026, addressing the wave of comments and direct messages he received. Jamiu expressed frustration that people were deeply invested in his personal life, particularly his religious practices. He highlighted the irony of individuals attempting to dictate the life choices of a man in his forties.

"It's only in Nigeria people are so bothered about another person's life," Jamiu Azeez wrote. He described the reaction to his church video as "crazy," noting that critics flooded blog comments, especially on Facebook, and even confronted him in his private direct messages.

Defending the Right to Personal Choice

In his firm rebuttal, the Nollywood star emphasized his fundamental right to freedom of religion. He pointed out a crucial detail: he never officially declared that he had converted faiths. Despite this, the assumption alone sparked significant backlash, primarily from some members of the Muslim community who even suggested he change his name.

"I can choose to practise any religion and that should not be anyone's problem. I never even came out to say I have converted o, una wan kpai me," he stated. Ending his post with a touch of sarcasm, he added, "No worry, I go wear babalawo cloth tomorrow," hinting he could just as easily wear traditional attire next.

Mixed Reactions from the Online Community

The actor's post ignited a fresh round of discussions online, with fans and followers sharing divided opinions. While some supported his stance on personal freedom, others felt the strong reaction was born out of concern.

One user, @teegrooves_global, commented in support: "Egbon you no need reply them jor. Let them say what they like. I Stand with you always." Another, @imam_alowoeshin, offered a different perspective: "For me, since it's base on religion and people rally like that for you it's nothing but love... this is people showing love."

Some commentators, like @elim_101, believed the confusion stemmed from his traditionally Muslim name, while others simply urged people to mind their own business.

This incident follows similar public speculation around other celebrities like singer Kizz Daniel, showing how intensely personal religious choices are scrutinized in the Nigerian public sphere. Jamiu Azeez's response underscores an ongoing conversation about celebrity privacy, personal faith, and the boundaries of public commentary in the digital age.
