NBC Issues Stern Warning to Broadcasters Over Unprofessional Conduct and Bias
The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has issued a firm warning to broadcast presenters, stating that those who present personal opinions as facts or engage in bullying guests during live interviews will face significant sanctions. This announcement was made in a statement released on Friday, April 17, as the commission highlighted a concerning rise in violations of the sixth edition of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code, particularly across news, current affairs, and political programmes.
The NBC expressed deep concern that broadcast platforms are increasingly being used in ways that deviate from their fundamental obligation to inform the public with accuracy, balance, and professionalism. According to the commission, some anchors and presenters are straying from established professional standards by denying fair hearing to opposing views and compromising neutrality during broadcasts. Such actions, the NBC emphasized, violate specific provisions of the broadcasting code, which mandate impartiality and require that all sides of issues of public interest are fairly represented.
Class B Breaches and Enforcement Measures
In a clear directive, the NBC declared that henceforth, any anchor or presenter found to have expressed personal opinion as fact, bullied or intimidated a guest, denied fair hearing to opposing views, or otherwise compromised neutrality, shall be deemed to have committed a Class B breach. This classification underscores the seriousness with which the commission views these infractions, indicating that they will not be tolerated in the broadcasting industry.
The commission also voiced alarm over the growing trend of political actors using broadcast platforms to promote divisive, inflammatory, and unverified content. It stressed that broadcasters retain full editorial responsibility for all material aired, including live programmes, and cannot shift that responsibility to guests.
