Niger State Government Moves to Revitalize Patient Complaint Offices in Hospitals
The Niger State Government has announced it is in the final stages of developing a comprehensive framework to reactivate and institutionalize the Patients Information and Complaints Office (PICO) across all public health facilities within the state. This initiative aims to create a structured, accessible, and transparent platform for patients and their families to seek information, lodge complaints, and contribute to enhancements in healthcare delivery.
Commissioner's Announcement During World Health Day Event
Dr. Multala Muhammad Bagana, the Commissioner for Health, made this disclosure during a press briefing held at the Ministry of Health's conference hall in Minna, as part of the 2026 World Health Day celebrations. The event, themed "Together for Health: Stand with Science," highlighted the state's commitment to improving healthcare services.
Dr. Bagana emphasized that the PICO framework is being implemented in close collaboration with the Hospital Management Board and other relevant agencies and ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs). He explained that this move is designed to enhance responsiveness and public trust, while institutionalizing continuous quality improvement and strengthening professional accountability.
Goals and Priorities of the Healthcare Reform
The commissioner outlined that the reform priorities will focus on several key areas, including:
- Transforming the image and culture of the Ministry of Health
- Revamping the health sector to meet modern standards
- Rebuilding financial credibility and trust among the public
- Institutional transformation to ensure sustainability
- Providing visionary leadership in the primary healthcare agenda
- Promoting excellence in all aspects of healthcare delivery
Dr. Bagana noted that the PICO framework will ensure patient feedback directly informs healthcare planning, policy, and service delivery across Niger State, making the system more patient-centric and efficient.
Commemoration of World Health Day 2026
During the event, Dr. Bagana stated that Niger State, in collaboration with its partners, joined the global community to commemorate World Health Day 2026. He described this as not only a celebration of progress in healthcare but also an opportunity to confront existing challenges, renew commitments, and redefine the future of healthcare delivery in the state.
"Today, we join the global community to commemorate World Health Day 2026, a day set aside not only to celebrate progress in health, but also to confront our realities, renew our commitments, and define the future of healthcare for our people," he said. He added that World Health Day is not merely symbolic but a moment of truth, responsibility, and renewed commitment.
Activities and Appreciation for Partners
Dr. Bagana also expressed gratitude to development partners for their continued support to the state government. The 2026 World Health Day celebration included various activities, such as a road walk by ministry officials and development partners. The walk commenced from Senator Dahiru Awaisu Kuta Primary Health Care Centre, passed through Government House, Obasanjo Complex, and General Hospital, and terminated at the Old Secretariat Complex.
Additionally, free medical screenings were provided for civil servants and members of the public at designated centers across Minna, the state capital, further emphasizing the state's dedication to accessible healthcare services.
