Anambra Health Ministry Orders Mortuary Registration and Licence Renewal
Anambra Orders Mortuary Registration and Licence Renewal

The Anambra State Ministry of Health has issued a directive requiring all proprietors and operators of mortuaries within the state to register their facilities and renew any expired licences in accordance with the existing Public Health Law. This announcement was made through a public notice released by Chukwulobelu Ugochukwu, the Director of Medical Services, who acted on behalf of the Commissioner for Health, Afam Obidike.

Registration Requirements for Mortuaries

According to the official notice, every mortuary currently functioning in Anambra State that has not yet been registered with the Directorate of Medical Services must immediately begin the registration process. Additionally, facilities holding operational licences that have expired or are approaching their renewal date are required to regularize their status without any further delay.

The ministry emphasized that hospitals offering mortuary services are obligated to register their mortuary units separately, irrespective of whether the hospital itself is already registered. This directive applies to all mortuary facilities operating illegally or without proper governmental approval.

Healthcare Reform Agenda

The notice explained that this exercise is part of the state government's broader healthcare reform agenda, which aims to sanitize and strengthen the healthcare sector. The initiative is expected to enhance regulatory oversight and maintain proper standards in mortuary practice. Furthermore, it will help control the spread of infectious diseases during outbreaks and pandemics, while curbing unlawful activities associated with the improper handling and mutilation of corpses.

“The ministry is updating its database of registered mortuary facilities across the state to enhance monitoring, regulation and compliance with public health regulations,” the statement read.

Deadline and Enforcement

Affected operators have been given until June 5 to complete their registration and licence renewal processes. After this deadline, full enforcement and inspection exercises will commence throughout the state, and appropriate sanctions will be imposed on defaulters and illegally operating facilities in accordance with the law.

The ministry appealed to stakeholders to continue supporting efforts aimed at improving healthcare service delivery in the state.
