ISN Medical is urging the Nigerian government to fulfill its commitment under the historic Abuja Declaration, as the company sets its sights on African expansion and local manufacturing. Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Felix Ofungwu made the call during a press briefing in Lagos, emphasizing the need for stronger public-private collaboration to address persistent healthcare gaps.
Abuja Declaration Implementation Urged
Ofungwu noted that Nigeria, a signatory to the 2001 African Union accord, has yet to allocate at least 15 percent of its annual budget to health as pledged. He expressed regret that only a few AU member states have honored this commitment over the years. "The Abuja Declaration remains a critical benchmark for improving healthcare across Africa, and Nigeria must act urgently to meet its obligations," he said.
Opportunity Amid Stability
Highlighting recent improvements in foreign exchange stability, Ofungwu described the past twelve months as relatively more stable, presenting an opportunity for deeper investment in Nigeria's healthcare sector. "Foreign exchange volatility has historically posed challenges for medical equipment importation, but the current stability allows organizations to plan and invest with greater confidence," he added.
Ofungwu reaffirmed ISN Medical's commitment to quality and integrity, stating, "We ensure that patients who interact with us are properly diagnosed. For 45 years, we have consistently delivered on this promise. Our goal is to lead the charge so that every patient receives the correct diagnosis." The company provides equipment and consumables for diagnosis confirmation and disease research, carefully selecting its partners.
Consumer Healthcare Unit Focus
A significant part of ISN Medical's work is channeled through its Consumer Healthcare Unit, which delivers quality diagnostic solutions directly to patients and healthcare providers. The unit's flagship product, the Accu-Chek range, is widely used for daily blood sugar monitoring in diabetes patients.
Head of the unit, Ify Chioke, stressed the importance of quality, noting that poor products can directly worsen a patient's condition. "Our commitment to supplying only the best medical equipment is not just a business decision; it is a patient safety obligation. We ensure patients and healthcare providers receive quality solutions from us," she said.
