The Kano State Government has ordered an immediate investigation into the tragic death of Aishatu Umar, a housewife and mother of five children. Mrs. Umar passed away in the early hours of Tuesday, 13 January 2026, following months of suffering from post-surgical complications at the state-owned Abubakar Imam Urology Centre.
Family's Account of Alleged Medical Neglect
Speaking for the grieving family, Abubakar Mohammed provided a distressing timeline of events. He stated that Aishatu Umar fell ill several months ago and underwent an operation at the urology centre in September 2025.
The surgery was intended to improve her health, but instead, she began experiencing severe abdominal pain shortly afterwards. Over the next four months, Mrs. Umar repeatedly returned to the hospital, complaining of persistent and intense pain.
The family alleges that during these visits, medical personnel at the centre only prescribed painkillers. They claim no thorough investigation was conducted to find the root cause of her deteriorating condition until it was too late.
Shocking Discovery and Rapid Deterioration
Just two days before her death, comprehensive medical tests and scans were finally performed. The results, according to the family, revealed a catastrophic error: a pair of surgical scissors had been left inside Aishatu Umar's abdomen during the initial operation in September.
Plans for an emergency corrective surgery were made following this discovery. However, her condition worsened rapidly before the procedure could be performed. Aishatu Umar died at approximately 1:00 a.m. on Tuesday, after enduring what her family describes as months of preventable agony.
Government's Response and Pledge for Justice
In a statement released by Samira Suleiman, spokesperson for the Kano State Hospitals Management Board, the government expressed profound distress over the incident. The Board, under the authority of the Executive Secretary, Dr. Mansur Mudi Nagoda, has taken note of the report and extended its deepest condolences to the Umar family.
The statement confirmed that Dr. Nagoda has ordered an immediate and thorough investigation into the allegations at the Abubakar Imam Urology Centre. The government insists the probe will be transparent, impartial, and professional.
"The Board assures the public that appropriate actions will be taken in line with established regulations should any negligence be established. Patient safety remains our utmost priority," Suleiman noted.
The family has described the incident as a grave violation of medical ethics and patient safety. They are calling on the state government and relevant health regulatory bodies to ensure full accountability for those responsible.
