Lafarge Africa Plc has taken a significant step in the fight against malaria by launching a nationwide outreach campaign in its host communities. On May 6, 2026, the company commemorated World Malaria Day with a coordinated effort that mobilized over 1,000 participants across multiple locations. The campaign aimed to raise awareness, promote prevention, and encourage early treatment of malaria, which remains one of Nigeria's most persistent public health challenges.
Campaign Theme and Partnerships
Under the theme "Driven to End Malaria: Now We Can. Now We Must," the initiative brought together residents, health stakeholders, and community leaders. Lagos served as a key hub, with activities taking place in various host communities. Lafarge Africa partnered with the Society for Family Health (SFH), Lagos State Health District II, and Leadway Health to distribute insecticide-treated nets, provide health education sessions, and offer guidance on environmental hygiene and other practical interventions proven to combat malaria.
Commitment to Long-Term Impact
Dr. Kemi Albert-Udoh, Occupational Health Coordinator at Lafarge Africa, emphasized the company's deliberate and long-term commitment to eradicating malaria. She stated, "Malaria has been with us for decades and continues to affect millions, particularly pregnant women and children. Through collective effort and sustained intervention, we can significantly reduce its impact." Gabriel Pollyn, Head of Sustainability and Sponsorships at Lafarge, added that the theme serves as a call to action, reminding everyone that the tools to end malaria already exist but must be matched with consistency and will.
Community-Level Awareness
The campaign's impact was felt at an individual level. Beneficiary Mudzu Ummusalma left the event with a clearer understanding of malaria transmission, the importance of maintaining a clean environment, and the necessity of using treated nets. She intends to share this knowledge with her household and neighborhood. Lafarge Africa aims to build a culture of prevention that outlasts any single campaign, fostering community-driven health and well-being. By empowering individuals and promoting education, the company is laying the groundwork for a healthier future where the threat of malaria is significantly diminished.
