The Yobe State Specialist Hospital has achieved a significant milestone by successfully performing a highly specialized lower jaw surgery, known as segmental mandibulectomy, on a 40-year-old patient. Hospital authorities confirmed that this procedure was conducted for the first time in any state-owned health facility in Yobe State and across the entire North-East region of Nigeria.
Details of the Surgery
Prof. Usman Geidam, the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, explained that the surgery involved the removal of a portion of the lower jawbone, medically referred to as the mandible. The operation was carried out to excise a tumor or diseased section of the jaw. Specifically, the patient, a 40-year-old woman, was diagnosed with mandibular ameloblastoma, a type of benign but aggressive tumor affecting the jaw.
The complex procedure required advanced reconstruction techniques, including the use of reconstruction plates and an iliac crest bone graft. Prof. Geidam emphasized that this successful operation represents a major step forward in Yobe State's efforts to enhance access to specialized and tertiary healthcare services.
Medical Team and Patient Recovery
The surgery was led by Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, Dr. Muhammad Fusami, with critical support from Dr. Peter Umejiego. Prof. Geidam noted that the successful outcome highlights the growing pool of skilled medical professionals being nurtured within the state's health system. The patient is currently recuperating and responding positively to treatment, according to the CMD.
Government Investment in Healthcare
Prof. Geidam attributed this achievement to the sustained investment in the health sector by the administration of Governor Mai Mala Buni. This investment focuses on strengthening healthcare delivery and infrastructure, expanding specialized medical services, equipping hospitals, and creating an enabling environment for healthcare professionals to deliver quality, life-saving interventions. The government's strategic commitment to healthcare development is reducing dependence on referrals outside the state and improving access to advanced medical care for the people of Yobe State.
The specialist hospital remains dedicated to professionalism and sustaining efforts to reposition the facility as a center for specialized healthcare delivery.
