Experts Advocate Affordable Nutrition Strategies as Food Costs Soar in Nigeria
As escalating food prices continue to burden household finances and alter dietary patterns, health professionals are calling on Nigerians to embrace economical and practical nutrition approaches that maintain balanced diets without overspending. This critical issue took center stage at the inaugural Wellness Diary Live event, an interactive virtual session organized by Brand Multimedia Communication Network to foster deeper dialogues on health and wellness.
Focus on Smart Nutrition for Women on a Budget
The mid-series installment of the Wellness Diary initiative, titled Smart Nutrition for Women on a Budget, convened participants and a nutrition specialist to explore how families can uphold healthy eating habits amidst economic challenges. During the session, nutrition expert Mrs. Amaka Nwaora challenged the common misconception that healthy eating is inherently costly, attributing the real obstacle to inadequate planning and excessive reliance on processed foods.
"Healthy eating does not have to drain your pockets. The real challenge is poor planning and over-reliance on processed foods," Nwaora asserted. She elaborated that with strategic planning and utilization of locally accessible foods, families can achieve nutritional balance without financial stress. Nwaora further underscored the pivotal role women play in influencing household nutrition, highlighting that their daily choices profoundly impact family health outcomes.
Practical Tips for Cost-Effective Nutrition
Nwaora outlined several straightforward practices to enhance both nutrition and affordability within homes:
- Meal planning to reduce impulsive purchases
- Buying food items in bulk to lower per-unit costs
- Minimizing food waste through better storage and usage
- Prioritizing seasonal foods for freshness and savings
A significant feature of the session was the introduction of the Healthy Plate model, designed to assist families in composing meals by proportioning vegetables, whole grains, and proteins for optimal nutrition. Attendees also gained insights into budget-friendly dietary options, such as incorporating beans, eggs, and locally grown vegetables as alternatives to pricier items.
Promoting Healthier Lifestyle Habits
The discussion also advocated for lifestyle adjustments, including reduced intake of sugary beverages and fewer meals consumed outside the home, to support overall well-being. Convener and Host of Wellness Diary, Aderayo Olaiya, explained that the initiative aims to evolve beyond mere awareness into an active, participatory wellness platform.
"Wellness Diary started as a podcast, where we share expert insights on health, women, children, and family wellness. With Wellness Diary Live, we are creating a more interactive space where participants can engage experts directly, ask questions and gain practical knowledge," Olaiya stated. She added that the program will conclude with a Wellness Summit later this year, gathering experts, stakeholders, and participants for extensive engagement on health and wellness topics.
