The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has issued a strong public condemnation of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, accusing him of serious abuse of power. In a statement released on 7 January 2026, the group warned that Wike's actions threaten to undermine democratic governance and the integrity of national institutions.
Allegations of Overreach and EFCC Manipulation
In the statement delivered by its National Coordinator, Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, the CNG outlined a pattern of concerning behavior. The coalition asserts that Wike has repeatedly overstepped the constitutional boundaries of his ministerial office. They highlighted his alleged interference in matters beyond the FCT, describing it as an unwarranted encroachment into the political affairs of states and federal agencies.
The group pinpointed a specific incident as a major example of this overreach. They accused Minister Wike of orchestrating the manipulation of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to target the Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed. According to the CNG, this represents a blatant misuse of power for political purposes, which they find completely unacceptable.
A Warning to Tinubu and Fears for Institutional Integrity
The CNG's statement carried a direct caution for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. They urged the President to be vigilant, warning that Wike's alleged conduct, if left unchecked, could severely tarnish the integrity of the entire administration. The coalition reminded the President that no individual holds a monopoly on political power, implying that consequences will follow excessive actions.
Furthermore, the group expressed deep concern over the erosion of institutional independence. They criticized the EFCC's response to Governor Mohammed's allegations as appearing scripted to defend Wike, which raises serious questions about the anti-graft agency's autonomy. The CNG argued that the commission is being weaponized for political persecution instead of focusing on its core mandate of fighting financial crimes.
Historical Pattern and a Call to Defend Democracy
The Northern coalition did not limit its criticism to Wike's current role. They referenced his past tenure in Rivers State, alleging a history of compromising democratic institutions like the police, judiciary, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). They claim similar tendencies are now manifesting at the national level, including attempts to destabilize opposition parties like the People's Democratic Party (PDP).
The CNG concluded with a rallying cry for all Nigerians. They called on civil society, political parties, and citizens to remain vigilant in defending electoral integrity and the rule of law. The group emphasized that collective action is needed to reject intimidation and ensure the nation's democratic future is protected from what they see as a dangerous power struggle and governance crisis.
