A civil society organisation in Kano State has issued a strong condemnation against former governor and senator, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, accusing him of attempting to obstruct ongoing corruption investigations initiated by the current administration.
Allegations of Undue Influence and Contract Scandals
The Kano People’s Rights Alliance (KPRA), through its chairman Maikano Danlami, stated that it has observed persistent efforts by Senator Kwankwaso to undermine Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf's government. The group claims this is to protect personal interests, detrimentally affecting the people of Kano.
The primary focus of the alleged interference is an inquiry into contracts linked to Kwankwaso's nephew, Musa Garba, who owns Novomed Pharmaceuticals. According to the KPRA, Garba secured a drug supply contract worth N440 million now under intense scrutiny by the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission (PCACC).
Danlami emphasised that the probe was launched following credible claims of a drug contract scam, raising serious questions about transparency in the state's procurement processes. The situation is further complicated by the discovery of another questionable contract for borehole water repairs valued at approximately N660 million.
Governor's Stance and Deepening Political Rift
In response to the allegations, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf's administration has reaffirmed its commitment to due process. A joint statement from the Commissioner for Information, Baba Halilu Dantiye, and the Director General of Media and Publicity, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, confirmed that the governor has directed the PCACC chairman to investigate the matters immediately.
The KPRA chairman, however, alleges that Kwankwaso has intensified efforts to manipulate the situation instead of respecting the governor's authority. Danlami linked this to Governor Yusuf's potential departure from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), suggesting Kwankwaso is fighting to maintain control over state resources.
"This manoeuvring not only jeopardises the integrity of the current administration but also threatens the very fabric of democracy in Kano State," Danlami stated.
Call for Public Vigilance and Accountability
The KPRA has called on Senator Kwankwaso to cease his alleged interference and recognise that his tenure has ended. The group urged the people of Kano to support the Yusuf administration's anti-corruption efforts.
"The fight against corruption is not the responsibility of the government alone; it requires the active participation of every citizen," Danlami asserted. He called on civil society, the media, and the public to join in demanding transparency and holding leaders accountable.
The alliance vowed to continue advocating for the rights of Kano residents, ensuring their voices are heard and their interests protected against those seeking personal gain from state resources.
