Heavy Security Deployed at Kaduna Court for El-Rufai's Bail Ruling
On Tuesday, a substantial security presence was established at the Kaduna State High Court as former Governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai arrived for the continuation of proceedings in a corruption case filed against him by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC). The heightened security measures were implemented to manage the crowd that had gathered, awaiting the outcome of the court's ruling on El-Rufai's bail application.
Court Proceedings and Public Interest
El-Rufai, who has consistently denied the allegations, was transported to the court by ICPC operatives in a white Hilux vehicle. The case involves a nine-count amended charge, which includes allegations of fraud, abuse of office, and corruption. The proceedings resumed with the hearing of his bail application, following an earlier plea taken by the court.
Defence counsel Ukpong Abang is leading the legal team representing El-Rufai in this matter. Journalists and members of the public were present at the court, reflecting significant public interest in the case. The armed security personnel maintained order by keeping spectators away from the court premises to ensure a smooth judicial process.
Background of the Case
Recall that in March, the ICPC arraigned former Governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai before the Kaduna State High Court on charges related to advance fee fraud and money laundering. The arraignment took place before Justice Darius Khobo, after the prosecution counsel, Dr. Osuobeni Ekoi Akponimisingha, strategically amended the initial charge.
The prosecution separated the joint charge previously filed against El-Rufai and his co-defendant, Amadu Sule, citing Sule's continued absence from court due to a reported medical condition. The court granted this application, allowing the proceedings to proceed against El-Rufai alone.
El-Rufai now faces nine amended counts, alleging violations under multiple laws, including the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences Act, as well as Kaduna State's Penal Code and Public Procurement Law. The case highlights ongoing efforts to address corruption allegations involving high-profile political figures in Nigeria.
