HEDA Resource Centre Commends Nigeria Immigration Service for Swift Action on Border Extortion Allegations
The Human and Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA) Resource Centre has publicly commended the leadership of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) for its prompt and decisive response to widespread allegations of extortion along the Lagos-Seme border corridor. The anti-corruption organization described this action as a critical and necessary step toward restoring public confidence in the agency and reinforcing institutional integrity.
NIS Leadership Takes Decisive Measures Against Corruption
In a detailed statement, HEDA specifically lauded the Comptroller-General of the NIS, Kemi Nandap, for suspending the affected comptrollers and ordering a comprehensive investigation into the reported misconduct. The organization emphasized that such decisive measures send a strong and unequivocal signal that corruption and abuse of office will not be tolerated within the Service, marking a positive shift in accountability practices.
HEDA's Chairman, Olanrewaju Suraju, stated, "The decision to suspend officers and initiate an investigation is a welcome development. However, Nigerians have witnessed similar actions in the past that failed to yield concrete outcomes. It is, therefore, crucial that this investigation is not only thorough but also transparent, with periodic updates provided to the public."
Call for Transparency and Public Accountability in the Probe
While applauding the initial steps, HEDA stressed that it is imperative for the ongoing investigation to be pursued diligently and transparently, ensuring it reaches a logical conclusion. The organization urged the NIS to make the findings of the probe public and to hold all officers found culpable accountable in accordance with the law, thereby setting a new standard for institutional integrity.
The anti-corruption group highlighted that extortion at border points severely undermines Nigeria's integrity, discourages lawful trade and travel, and erodes citizens' trust in public institutions. To address this, HEDA called on the NIS to strengthen its internal monitoring systems and ensure that accountability mechanisms are not only reactive but also preventive, fostering a culture of compliance and ethical conduct.
Encouraging Public Participation in the Fight Against Corruption
HEDA encouraged members of the public to utilize the official reporting channels provided by the NIS to report incidents of misconduct, noting that citizens' active participation is vital in the collective fight against corruption. The organization reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to promoting transparency and accountability in public institutions, urging the NIS to seize this opportunity to demonstrate that justice is both served and seen to be served.
By taking these actions, the NIS can help rebuild trust, enhance Nigeria's international reputation, and create a more secure and fair environment for trade and travel across its borders.
