Obi Media Office: Support Rooted in Governance Record, Not Online Fad
Obi Media Office: Support Based on Governance Record

The Media Office of former presidential candidate Peter Obi has dismissed claims that his rising political influence is an "online fad," insisting it is firmly rooted in verifiable governance performance and economic track record.

Statement from Media Office

In a statement issued on Monday, spokesperson Ibrahim Umar of the Peter Obi Media Office (POMR) said the growing "Obidient" movement should not be reduced to mere social media activism, stressing that it reflects public response to Obi's record in both private and public service.

Corporate Governance Background

The statement highlighted Obi's pre-political career in corporate governance, including his tenure as one of the youngest chairmen of Fidelity Bank Nigeria and other leadership roles in the financial and logistics sectors, which it said shaped his philosophy of fiscal discipline and cost efficiency.

Governorship Achievements

It further referenced his administration as Governor of Anambra State from 2006 to 2014, during which the Anambra Integrated Development Strategy (ANIDS) was implemented in line with broader development goals. According to the statement, his tenure was marked by reforms in fiscal management, education, infrastructure, and public accountability. It added that the state recorded stronger financial discipline, expanded road construction across urban and rural areas, and improved educational outcomes through targeted reforms.

Transparency and Accountability

The Media Office also reiterated that Obi's administration maintained a reputation for transparency, noting that he did not face post-tenure corruption-related prosecutions or indictments from anti-graft agencies.

Response to Criticism

Responding to criticism of his online support base, the statement said the movement is driven by a "go and verify" culture, where supporters rely on public records, independent assessments, and governance data to substantiate their claims. It added that the momentum behind Obi's political relevance is further sustained by public concern over corruption, rising governance costs, and economic hardship, as well as his continued advocacy for fiscal discipline and human capital development.

The office concluded that Peter Obi's influence is not merely a product of social media amplification, but a reflection of a governance record that continues to resonate strongly with many Nigerians, particularly young people.
