Ondo State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Kayode Ajulo (SAN), has welcomed the Federal High Court judgment in Abuja that sentenced four individuals to death for their involvement in the deadly attack on St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State.
Landmark Victory for Justice
Reacting to the court verdict in a statement he personally signed on Wednesday, Ajulo described it as a landmark victory for justice and a clear signal that terrorism and violent extremism would not be allowed to prevail. He stated, “The judgment marks a significant milestone in the long and painful journey towards justice for the innocent worshippers whose lives were brutally cut short during the Pentecost Sunday massacre.”
Commendation for Prosecution and Security Agencies
Ajulo commended the prosecution team, security agencies—particularly the Department of State Services (DSS)—witnesses, and the court for ensuring that due process was followed throughout the trial. According to him, although the verdict cannot erase the pain suffered by victims, survivors, and bereaved families, it demonstrates that those responsible for acts of terror will ultimately face the full weight of the law.
“Today’s verdict sends a clear and unequivocal message that terrorism, violent extremism, and attacks on innocent citizens will never triumph over the rule of law,” he stated.
Government Commitment to Security
Ajulo said Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa remains committed to strengthening security across the state, protecting freedom of worship, and ensuring that perpetrators of violent crimes are brought to justice regardless of their affiliations. The Attorney General also stressed the need for continued collaboration among governments, security agencies, religious leaders, and communities in tackling terrorism and preventing future attacks.
Support for Victims and Future Prevention
He reaffirmed the state’s commitment to supporting victims, strengthening the security architecture, and ensuring effective prosecution of terrorism-related offences. “Our thoughts and prayers remain with the families of those who lost their loved ones in this horrific attack. We honour the memory of the departed and reaffirm our commitment that their sacrifice shall never be forgotten,” he added.
