The Yoruba One Voice (YOV) has renewed its demand for a thorough overhaul of Nigeria's security framework, emphasizing the need for greater capacity, accountability, and responsiveness amid rising security threats across the nation.
In a statement issued by its General Secretary, Prince Adedokun Ademiluyi, the group also called for the adoption of a decentralised policing system as a key component of true federalism in Nigeria. YOV observed that the current centralised security model has failed to effectively address the varied and localized security challenges facing the country.
The group argued that decentralising the police force would enable states and local governments to create and manage their own police services, tailored to the specific needs of their communities. This approach, according to YOV, would enhance collaboration between security agencies and local populations, fostering trust and improving intelligence gathering.
YOV further advocated for the urgent implementation of true federalism, asserting that it is the only governance system capable of rescuing Nigeria from stagnation. The group emphasized that true federalism is crucial for national unity and progress, as it respects the autonomy and rights of the country's diverse ethnic groups.
"Devolution of powers, equitable resource distribution, constitutional review, and human rights protection are fundamental steps that must be taken promptly if Nigeria is to overcome its challenges," the group stated.
YOV highlighted that devolution of powers would grant states and local councils greater autonomy to manage their affairs, including security, education, and healthcare. Equitable resource distribution would ensure fair allocation of national resources to promote balanced regional development.
"We call for a constitutional review to strengthen federal structures and guarantee the protection of human rights for all Nigerians. This includes mechanisms for redress in cases of rights violations and ensuring that governance reflects the aspirations of all ethnic groups," the statement read.
"Effective security reforms and true federalism are essential for national unity and public safety. Empowering local authorities and addressing regional disparities will create a more cohesive society where every citizen feels secure and valued," the group added.
YOV urged all stakeholders—including government at all levels, civil society, and citizens—to collaborate in implementing the necessary reforms for a peaceful and prosperous nation.
