Ahmadiyya Leader Advocates for Youth Alliance and Endorses Adebayo for National Change
The Amir and National Head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at of Nigeria, Alatoye Abdulazeez, has issued a compelling call for Nigerian youths to unite across ethnic and religious boundaries to shape the country's political future. He specifically endorsed Adewole Adebayo, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) 2023 presidential candidate, as a viable leader capable of driving meaningful national transformation. Abdulazeez emphasized that the destiny of Nigeria hinges critically on the ability of young people to organize strategically and rally behind credible candidates who prioritize collective progress.
Challenges of Youth Cohesion in Previous Elections
Abdulazeez pointed out that despite the emergence of youthful aspirants in past elections, a persistent lack of cohesion and strong alliances has consistently diluted their impact at the polls. He argued that Adebayo's candidacy under the SDP represents a significant opportunity to shift leadership dynamics, but only if young Nigerians are willing to collaborate and mobilize support beyond narrow sectional interests. The cleric warned that ongoing divisions along ethnic, religious, and regional lines continue to undermine national development, describing Nigeria as being in a critical phase of its evolution that demands urgent unity.
Emphasis on National Mindset and Electoral Integrity
Highlighting the need for a unifying national mindset, Abdulazeez stressed that collective advancement must take precedence over narrow affiliations. He also cautioned against vote-buying and other forms of electoral inducement, urging youths to reject short-term gains in favor of long-term nation-building through active and informed participation in governance. Reinforcing the principles of the Ahmadiyya movement, he cited its motto, "Love for All, Hatred for None," as a foundational element for fostering national unity, adding that religion should promote peace rather than division.
Condemnation of Violence and Assessment of Governance
Abdulazeez condemned acts of violence perpetrated in the name of faith, describing them as contrary to Islamic teachings. On the state of governance, he acknowledged efforts by President Bola Tinubu while noting that substantial improvements are still required in key sectors such as electricity supply and economic management. He urged citizens, particularly the youth, to take responsibility for shaping the nation's future, emphasizing that leadership extends beyond those in office to include the electorate who determine electoral outcomes. "Leadership is not just about those in office. It is also about those who choose them," he stated, underscoring the critical role of voter engagement in democratic processes.
