Delta North Youths Reject Okowa's Senate Bid Over Corruption Allegations
The Coalition of Delta North Youths, a pan-senatorial movement representing diverse communities, clans, and youth groups across the district, has formally rejected the senatorial ambition of former Delta State Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa. At a press briefing held in Agbor, Delta State, coalition leaders declared that Okowa should not be permitted to contest for the Delta North Senate seat until he clears himself of alleged N1.3 trillion corruption charges reportedly brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Allegations of Corruption and Political Dominance
The conveners of the coalition, Benjamin Atagama-Ofochi, Kingsley Kainehi, and Vice President II of the Movement for the Emancipation of Anioma Nation, Mr. Agholor Okoh, accused the former governor of dominating the political space in Delta North for an extended period. According to them, Delta North is not pleading with Okowa to run for office and should no longer remain under what they described as his political control. They also criticized the continued influence of the Okowa family in public affairs, questioning the possibility of both father and daughter, Marilyn Okowa Daramola, who currently serves as a member of the State House of Assembly, returning to government positions.
The coalition emphasized that their opposition is driven by a desire to create opportunities for younger politicians in the district and to end what they termed political oppression and dominance. This stance reflects growing discontent among youth groups seeking more inclusive and transparent governance in the region.
