Group Alleges Intimidation of Ex-Minister Ahead of 2027 Taraba Poll
A political advocacy group, the Mamman Legacy Initiative (MLI), has leveled serious accusations against the Taraba State Government, alleging a coordinated campaign of intimidation targeting former Minister of Power, Saleh Mamman, in the lead-up to the 2027 governorship election. In a strongly worded statement released on Monday in Jalingo, the group asserted that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is being manipulated as a tool to undermine Mamman, describing these actions as a calculated and systematic attempt to weaken a perceived political rival.
Security Operations and Political Disruption
The allegations surfaced following reports that security operatives recently surrounded Mamman's residence. MLI claimed this move was specifically designed to disrupt a planned homecoming rally scheduled for April 4, while also intimidating supporters and eroding the former minister's grassroots network across Taraba State. The group, through its coordinator Musa Mustapha, dismissed previous corruption allegations against Mamman—including claims of hidden cash—as unsubstantiated and lacking credible evidence, framing them as politically motivated smears.
Rising Political Tensions and Democratic Concerns
MLI further argued that these developments are driven by political motives, suggesting that Mamman's increasing profile has positioned him as a significant threat to the current administration. The statement accused political actors of resorting to institutional pressure rather than engaging in policy-based discourse to sideline him. These actions raise serious concerns about the state of democratic processes and political tolerance, the group declared, questioning whether citizens are being penalized for participating in political activities. Mamman, who served under former President Muhammadu Buhari, has not formally announced his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election, though speculation about a potential bid has intensified in recent months.
Calls for Transparency and Calm
In addition to its accusations, the group called on the All Progressives Congress (APC) to ensure transparency and fairness in its candidate selection process, citing disputes that followed the party's 2023 governorship primaries in Taraba State. MLI urged supporters of the former minister to remain calm, expressing confidence that truth and justice will ultimately prevail amid the escalating political tensions. As of the time of this report, neither the Taraba State Government nor the EFCC had issued a response to these allegations, leaving the situation unresolved and fueling further debate.
