INEC Unveils N873.78 Billion Budget Proposal for 2027 General Elections
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has formally proposed a comprehensive budget of N873.78 billion to conduct the 2027 general elections in Nigeria. This significant financial plan underscores the extensive preparations required for the upcoming electoral cycle, as detailed by INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan during a presentation to the National Assembly.
Budget Breakdown and Key Allocations
According to the proposal, election operations receive the largest share at N375.75 billion, covering all direct activities related to polling. This includes logistics, personnel, and materials essential for smooth election day processes. Additionally, election technology costs are allocated N209.21 billion, highlighting INEC's continued reliance on advanced technological systems to enhance transparency and efficiency in the electoral process.
Other notable allocations include N92.31 billion for election administrative costs, which encompass office operations and management, and N41.61 billion set aside for miscellaneous expenses. These figures collectively bring the total budget to N873.78 billion, reflecting the scale and complexity of organizing nationwide elections.
Statutory Requirements and Early Preparations
Prof. Amupitan emphasized that the budget submission aligns with statutory mandates requiring election funding to be appropriated at least 360 days before the scheduled election date. This proactive approach ensures that INEC can commence preparations well in advance, addressing potential challenges and securing necessary resources. The presentation was made before the Senate and House of Representatives joint committee on Electoral Matters on Thursday, February 12, 2026, at the National Assembly in Abuja.
The budget proposal is now under review by lawmakers, who will assess its feasibility and alignment with national priorities. This early planning phase is critical for ensuring that the 2027 elections are conducted smoothly, with adequate funding to support all operational and technological needs.
