Kogi East Political Group Announces Preferred Candidate for 2027 Senatorial Election
In a significant political development, the Kogi East Political and Good Governance Group (KEPGGG) has publicly endorsed Okutepa Usman Danladi as its preferred candidate for the Kogi East senatorial seat in the upcoming 2027 general elections. The announcement was made in Abuja following extensive consultations across the district and a thorough assessment of current political dynamics.
Concerns Over Representation Drive Endorsement Decision
The group's endorsement is rooted in deep-seated concerns about political representation within the three federal constituencies that comprise Kogi East. KEPGGG highlighted historical imbalances, noting that prior to the shift of political power to Kogi Central in 2015, the district had produced governors, but this influence has since waned. The group pointed out specific disparities in senatorial representation: by the end of the current cycle, the Dekina/Bassa federal constituency will have held the Senate seat for 18 years, while the Ankpa federal constituency has occupied it for eight years. In contrast, the Idah federal constituency has yet to produce a senator.
Based on these observations, KEPGGG argued for a more equitable rotation of representation among the constituencies, stating that such an approach is necessary to address longstanding imbalances and ensure fair political opportunities for all areas within the district.
Call for Equitable Rotation and Merit-Based Selection
KEPGGG emphasized the importance of a fairer distribution of political opportunities to promote inclusiveness and balance in Kogi East. The group maintained that its endorsement is part of a broader effort to foster conversations around equity and development in the region. It clarified that this move is not aligned with any specific political party but aims to contribute meaningfully to ongoing discussions about governance and representation.
In justifying its choice, the group cited Danladi's background in business and community engagement as key factors. Describing him as a candidate with experience in business and active involvement at the community level, KEPGGG highlighted these qualities as aligning with its vision for effective leadership. Additionally, the group urged political parties to prioritize competence and experience in candidate selection, cautioning against proxy politics and advocating for a merit-based approach to ensure the best representatives are chosen for the district.
Background and Context
As political activities gradually intensify ahead of the 2027 elections, this endorsement adds to the growing discourse in Kogi State. Previously, other aspirants have declared their ambitions, such as Michael Samuel Idoko, who announced his intention to contest for the Kogi State House of Assembly seat representing Olamaboro Constituency. Idoko, a media personality and grassroots advocate, pledged to focus on people-centred representation and accelerated development in his local government area.
There has been no official reaction from other aspirants to KEPGGG's endorsement at this time. The group's stance is expected to influence political strategies and candidate selections in the lead-up to the 2027 polls, as stakeholders navigate issues of representation and equity in Kogi East.
