Uganda Election 2026: Museveni Leads with 76% as Bobi Wine Claims House Arrest
Museveni Leads Uganda Election, Bobi Wine Under Security

Uganda's long-serving President, Yoweri Museveni, has surged to a formidable lead in the country's presidential election, based on partial results announced by the electoral commission. The figures, released on Friday, January 16, 2026, show the 81-year-old incumbent securing a dominant 76% of the vote from 45% of polling stations counted.

Opposition Leader Confined Amid Heavy Security

The election aftermath has been marked by high tension, particularly around the main opposition candidate, Bobi Wine. Reports indicate that security forces have heavily surrounded Wine's home in Kampala. His party, the National Unity Platform (NUP), has alleged that the 43-year-old pop star-turned-politician and his wife have been "effectively placed under house arrest."

In a statement on social media platform X, the NUP claimed that "security officers have unlawfully jumped over the perimeter fence and are now erecting tents within his compound." Local journalists confirmed they were blocked from accessing the residence in Magere. However, police spokesman Kituuma Rusoke offered a different narrative, stating that Wine, as a "person of interest," required the heavy deployment for his own safety.

Vote Counting Proceeds Despite Internet Shutdown

Electoral Commission chief Simon Byabakama assured the public that the vote tallying process remained on track despite a nationwide internet blackout imposed earlier in the week. Byabakama explained that the commission was utilizing a "private system" to transmit results from districts to the national tally centre in Kampala.

"We are on course to announce the winner of the presidential election within 48 hours," Byabakama stated. "Before 5 PM [14:00 GMT] tomorrow, we shall have the final results." This sets the deadline for the final presidential announcement at Saturday, January 17, 2026.

Allegations of Fraud and Voting Delays

The election day itself was fraught with challenges. Bobi Wine has alleged "massive" fraud during the voting, though he has not yet provided public evidence, and authorities have not responded to the claims. The voting process was conducted under the internet blackout, which the Uganda Communications Commission said was necessary to prevent misinformation and incitement.

Practical issues also plagued the polls. Voting was delayed by up to four hours in many stations due to late deliveries of ballot boxes and malfunctioning biometric voter verification machines. Some observers linked these logistical failures to the nationwide network outage.

The campaign period preceding the vote was reportedly marred by the disruption of opposition activities, with security forces accused of assaulting and detaining Wine's supporters. Police dismissed these complaints, instead accusing opposition supporters of being disruptive.

With Museveni's lead appearing insurmountable in the partial count, analysts suggest he is poised to extend his rule into a seventh term, cementing a political career that has spanned over four decades. The final results, expected by 4:00 PM local time on Saturday, will determine if the veteran leader's grip on power continues or if an unexpected shift occurs.
