Ogun West NNPP Senatorial Aspirant Abioro Damilare Resigns From Party
In a significant political development in Ogun State, Abioro Athande Damilare, a former senatorial aspirant of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) for the Ogun West Senatorial District, has officially resigned his membership from the party. The resignation, which took immediate effect, was formally communicated through a letter dated February 7, 2026.
Reasons Behind the Resignation
Damilare cited a combination of factors leading to his decision, including wide consultations, mentorship advice, guidance from stakeholders, supporters, associates, and his personal conviction based on current political realities. In his resignation letter addressed to the Chairman of the NNPP in Agosasa Ward, Ipokia Local Government Area, he emphasized that this move was not driven by bitterness or any internal crisis within the party.
"I hereby resign my membership from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP)," Damilare stated, adding that the decision was reached after careful consideration of various inputs and the prevailing political landscape.
Gratitude to Party Leadership
Despite his departure, Damilare expressed deep appreciation for the opportunities provided by the NNPP. He acknowledged the support from party leadership at all levels—national, state, local government, and ward—for allowing him to pursue his senatorial ambition during the last general election.
"I sincerely appreciate the leadership of the New Nigeria People’s Party for giving me the platform to express my political aspiration," he said. "I also acknowledge the immense support and cooperation I received from party members during and after the senatorial race."
Commitment to Public Service
While Damilare did not reveal his next political steps, he reassured Nigerians of his ongoing dedication to public service and national development. He pledged to faithfully discharge any responsibilities entrusted to him, in alignment with the rule of law and democratic values.
"I assure the good people of Nigeria that if allowed to serve at any level, I will faithfully discharge my responsibilities in line with the rule of law and the democratic values of our great country," he affirmed.
Political Implications in Ogun West
Political observers in the Ogun West Senatorial District view Damilare’s resignation as a notable event, given his grassroots influence in Agosasa and surrounding communities within Ipokia Local Government Area. His exit occurs as political alignments are gradually forming ahead of future electoral contests in Ogun State, particularly in Ogun West, which remains a hotspot for intense political activity.
Damilare concluded his letter by wishing the NNPP continued success in its future endeavors. As of the latest reports, the NNPP leadership in Agosasa Ward has not yet issued an official response to the resignation.
This development highlights the dynamic nature of Nigerian politics, where shifts in party affiliations can signal broader trends and realignments, especially in key regions like Ogun West.
