The Okun Development Association (ODA), the leading socio-cultural organization representing the Yoruba community in Kogi State, has publicly declared its firm backing for the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan. In a significant statement released on Tuesday in Abuja, the group also called for measured discourse and restraint among stakeholders as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections.
Commendation for Presidential Appointment
Ambassador Akenson Rotimi, the President-General of ODA, speaking on behalf of Okun indigenes globally, praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointing Amupitan. He described the selection as a clear affirmation of competence, character, and merit-based leadership. Rotimi emphasized that this appointment honors not only Okunland and Kogi State but also reinforces the importance of integrity and capability in public service roles across Nigeria.
The confidence placed in Prof. Joash Amupitan (SAN) is a tribute to Okunland, Kogi State, and all Nigerians who advocate for public offices to be held by individuals of proven integrity and skill, Rotimi stated. The association pledged unwavering support for the INEC chairman, expressing strong belief in his capacity to guide the electoral body during a pivotal period in the nation's democratic evolution.
Highlighting Amupitan's Qualifications and Values
According to the ODA, Amupitan's extensive academic and professional background showcases a commitment to discipline, adherence to due process, and robust institutional principles. The group noted that in every role he has undertaken, Amupitan has displayed the necessary temperament, intellectual rigor, and moral fortitude to handle sensitive national duties with fairness and decisiveness.
The association further portrayed him as an embodiment of Okunland's core values, which include honesty, diligence, humility, and selfless service. They asserted that his leadership is expected to enhance public confidence in the electoral process, with his dedication to fostering impartial institutions being precisely what INEC needs to bolster credibility within Nigeria's electoral framework.
Appeal for Restraint and Institutional Channels
While acknowledging that the position of INEC Chairman inherently draws public attention and scrutiny, the ODA urged all stakeholders, political figures, and citizens to direct any concerns through proper legal and institutional avenues. We advocate for moderation in public statements and encourage Nigerians to allow Prof. Amupitan the requisite space to perform his duties with neutrality, courage, and a profound sense of responsibility, Rotimi emphasized.
The association reaffirmed its dedication to national unity, democratic stability, and the success of the current administration, expressing optimism that Amupitan will uphold the integrity of his office. They also called on Nigerians to extend their support through goodwill and prayers as he embarks on what they termed a solemn national assignment.
