UK Envoy Meets Nuhu Ribadu on Security, Religious Freedom

The UK Special Envoy for Freedom of Religion or Belief, David Smith, met with National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu in Abuja to discuss Nigeria's security challenges. The meeting formed part of the envoy's three-day visit aimed at strengthening interfaith dialogue and promoting peaceful coexistence across Nigeria.

Key Discussions on Security and Religious Freedom

Smith emphasized that the talks focused on how the UK and Nigeria can collaborate to address freedom of religion or belief (FoRB) concerns. He noted that this cooperation is integral to the British security and defense partnership to protect communities. The UK envoy stated that the visit allowed him to listen, learn, and observe how FoRB is experienced in everyday life and its connection to Nigeria's broader security and cohesion challenges.

Meetings with Other Officials

During his visit, Smith also met with the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, and Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang. Additionally, he engaged with senior government officials, religious leaders, civil society organizations, and local communities to deepen cooperation on religious freedom and national cohesion.

Smith highlighted the importance of Nigerian-led progress, rooted in strong institutions and inclusive dialogue, with FoRB at its core. He reaffirmed the UK's commitment to supporting practical efforts for greater peace, security, and prosperity for all.

Previous Counterterrorism Talks

Recall that Ribadu previously held counterterrorism talks with US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The discussions led to enhanced intelligence-sharing and military cooperation against Boko Haram and ISIS-linked threats. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu appreciated continued US training and intelligence support for Nigerian security operations.

NAF Airstrikes in Borno

In a related development, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) conducted successful strikes eliminating terrorists in Borno State during Operation HADIN KAI. Air Marshal Aneke confirmed that intelligence-driven air operations will continue to target terrorist networks and hideouts. NAF plans to sustain joint operations with allied partners to combat terrorism and restore peace.
