Wike Speaks on Moves to Make Jonathan PDP Candidate for 2027 Election
Wike Speaks on Jonathan PDP Candidate Moves

Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has broken his silence on reports suggesting that some political forces are working to make former President Goodluck Jonathan the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2027 general elections.

Wike Addresses Speculation

Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Monday, Wike dismissed the claims as mere speculation, stating that he was not aware of any such moves. He emphasized that the PDP remains a united party and that any decision on its candidate would be made through due process.

“I have heard the rumours, but I can tell you that there is no truth to them. The PDP is focused on strengthening its structures and preparing for the next elections. We are not discussing candidates at this time,” Wike said.

Background of the Reports

The speculation gained traction after some political analysts suggested that Jonathan could be a consensus candidate to unify the opposition. Jonathan, who served as president from 2010 to 2015, has not publicly expressed interest in running again.

Wike urged party members and the public to disregard the reports, describing them as distractions. He called on PDP supporters to remain focused on the party's goals.

Political Reactions

Some PDP chieftains have also weighed in, with a few expressing support for the idea of a Jonathan candidacy, while others insist the party must hold a transparent primary to select its flagbearer.

Wike’s statement is seen as an attempt to calm tensions within the party as it gears up for the 2027 elections.
