Nigerian Activist Sounds Alarm Over 2027 Elections in Petition to US President Trump
In a dramatic move highlighting growing concerns about Nigeria's democratic future, prominent political activist Comrade Timi Frank has petitioned United States President Donald Trump regarding alleged threats to the nation's electoral integrity ahead of the 2027 general elections. The former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has raised serious alarms about what he describes as a looming "political genocide" orchestrated by the ruling party and National Assembly leadership.
Open Letter Details Grave Concerns About Electoral Manipulation
In an open letter dated February 7, Frank expressed deep apprehension about Nigeria's political trajectory, warning that the country could descend into chaos if current developments remain unchecked. "Nigeria's general elections scheduled for February 2027 are under serious threat," Frank wrote. "If current developments are not addressed, they may result in widespread unrest, possible anarchy, and a breakdown of law and order."
The activist specifically accused the Senate leadership of actively undermining crucial electoral reforms designed to prevent fraud. He singled out key provisions of the Electoral Act 2022, which he claimed reflect the will of over eighty percent of Nigerians but are being systematically compromised.
Allegations of Systematic Electoral Sabotage
Frank made several serious allegations in his detailed petition:
- The ruling party, working closely with what he termed a "highly compromised Senate President," has allegedly begun laying groundwork to manipulate and rig the 2027 general elections
- State institutions including the military, police, and judiciary are reportedly being pressured to ensure partisan control
- The federal government has allegedly spent millions of dollars on Washington lobbying firms to "launder its international image" rather than address governance failures
"The ruling party is actively engaging in what can only be described as political genocide," Frank stated, "using intimidation, coercion, and pressure to control the military, police, judiciary, and other institutions of state."
Historical Context and Credibility Concerns
The activist referenced the controversial 2023 presidential election to bolster his concerns, pointing to low voter turnout and critical observer reports. He noted that the current president was declared winner with only 36.61 percent of total votes cast from an eligible voter population exceeding 93 million. "These figures alone raise serious concerns about the credibility of the process," Frank emphasized.
He also cited reports by international observers including the European Union Election Observation Mission and the U.S. State Department, which highlighted transparency gaps and operational failures during previous elections.
Call for International Intervention and Oversight
Frank urged President Trump and U.S. lawmakers to exercise extreme caution in dealing with Nigeria's current government. "Any blanket endorsement risks legitimizing illegality and oppression in Nigeria," he warned. The activist specifically called for potential measures against the Senate President, whom he accused of disenfranchising Nigerians ahead of the crucial 2027 elections.
"The current Senate President appears determined to use his position to silence opposition voices and disenfranchise Nigerians," Frank asserted in his petition.
Broader Implications for Nigerian Democracy
Frank, who serves as ULMWP Ambassador to East Africa and the Middle East and Senior Advisor to the Global Friendship City Association (GFCA) in the USA, made an urgent plea for international stakeholders to help safeguard Nigeria's fragile democracy. He referenced former US Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom Sam Brownback, who reportedly expressed distrust of the Nigerian government.
"Continued disregard for these principles may spell disaster for an already fragile nation, under the watch of the international community," Frank concluded, emphasizing the critical need for credible electoral processes and transparent governance as Nigeria approaches another pivotal election cycle.
The petition comes amid ongoing concerns about electoral reforms in Nigeria, with organizations like the Kimpact Development Initiative (KDI) having previously expressed deep concern over key provisions rejected by the Nigerian Senate in the recently passed Electoral Act Amendment Bill. These developments collectively underscore the heightened tensions surrounding Nigeria's democratic institutions as the nation prepares for its next major electoral test.
