Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, confirmed the development. She revealed that the pastor's release on January 8, 2026, was made possible by a presidential pardon granted by President Patrice Talon of Benin Republic. This official act of clemency was formally gazetted on December 17, 2025.
Odumegwu-Ojukwu detailed that her office engaged in months of persistent diplomatic dialogue to achieve this outcome. Her personal involvement included a visit to Egbaji in August 2025 when he was hospitalised in Cotonou, underscoring the government's commitment to his case.
