Federal Government Issues Stern Warning Against Fake Ambassadors, Threatens Prosecution
The Federal Government of Nigeria has issued a firm and unequivocal warning to individuals who are falsely presenting themselves as ambassadors, emphasizing that the prestigious title is not for sale and can only be legitimately granted by the President of Nigeria. This declaration was made by Kimiebi Ebienfa, the spokesperson for the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during a press briefing held in Abuja on Friday, March 17.
Illegal Activities and Damage to National Image
Ebienfa described the alarming trend of fake ambassadorial claims as both illegal and severely damaging to Nigeria's international reputation. He stressed that individuals engaging in such deceptive practices risk facing serious legal consequences, including prosecution. The warning comes at a critical time as the government prepares to deploy a new batch of ambassadors following the completion of diplomatic clearances from host countries.
"We have received more than 25 agreements from countries where ambassador designates have been sent," Ebienfa revealed, referring to the approvals known as agrément. "Deployment will begin immediately after the exercise." He added that a comprehensive three-day induction programme is scheduled to take place from April 27 to 29, after which the envoys will be officially deployed to their respective missions abroad.
Growing Concerns Over Fraudulent Schemes
The ministry expressed deep concern over a rising number of individuals and organizations that are allegedly selling counterfeit ambassadorial titles to unsuspecting Nigerians. These fraudulent schemes often promise enticing diplomatic privileges, such as special passports, exclusive airport access, and immunity while traveling abroad. Ebienfa made it explicitly clear that only the President, in the capacity of Commander-in-Chief, holds the constitutional authority to appoint ambassadors, and any other claim constitutes impersonation.
"Ambassadorial titles are not conferred with the payment of money or subscription to membership in non-governmental organisations," he stated firmly. He further disclosed that some offenders have brazenly presented themselves to foreign missions and international organizations as official representatives of Nigeria, causing significant embarrassment and undermining the country's diplomatic standing.
Collaboration with Security Agencies
In response to these illicit activities, the ministry has confirmed reports of fake diplomatic passports, forged identity cards, and cloned diplomatic vehicle number plates associated with such scams. Ebienfa announced that authorities are now actively collaborating with key security agencies, including the Nigerian Immigration Service and the Nigeria Police Force, to thoroughly investigate and prosecute those involved in these fraudulent operations.
Clarification on Brand Ambassadors
Ebienfa also took the opportunity to clarify the distinction between legitimate brand ambassadors and diplomatic representatives. He explained that while individuals may serve as brand ambassadors for commercial companies, such roles do not grant them any legal right to use the title "Ambassador" in an official or diplomatic context. "You can be a brand ambassador for a company, but you cannot attach the title of ambassador to your name in a way that suggests diplomatic authority," he emphasized.
The ministry reiterated its unwavering commitment to protecting Nigeria's diplomatic integrity and warned that any act capable of bringing the country into disrepute will not be tolerated. This proactive stance aims to safeguard the nation's international image and ensure that only duly appointed envoys represent Nigeria on the global stage.
